Title: Yaddy Floaty

A BS leader compadre rang my phone this week inquiring about local floaty trip.  I offered my support and it was decided that we'd float a section I hadn't floated in 7 years.  This particular section runs through a state park for a couple miles, and straddles a Foothills/upper Piedmont Fall line.  Aforementioned fall line runs from Hanging Rock Park on the Dan across the Yadkin at Shoals, Lookout Shoals at the Catawba, and Cherokee Falls on the Broad

The flow was low, and water clear.  However, I'd forgotten this portion of the river grows up in weeds, and wispy green crap.  This rendered 80 percent of this section river unfishable.  This stuff starts making its presence know in August.

I tried to elicit responses from some topwater stuff, but no dice.  I can safely say the smallmouth of the Yadkin have an affinity for Peanut Envys.
Heck, even a flathead took a chance on one.

The weeds populated the rocky areas, the green cotton candy was every else.  Blobs where ghosting about in every pool.

The flattie took it after a spell of rain.  It rained a fair amount in the afternoon, and oddly enough, none of the precipitation showed up on the radar.

2.5-3 miles of this float contained water that was nearly useless.  I'd become frustrated with the quality of water, and the weed situation but the river redeemed itself somewhat towards the end.  Catching a flathead on a PE was the flyfishing moment of 2017 for me.

Flathead is pretty cool. Bet that was quite the tussle.

Any love on the clawdad? I've done well with it in that river, and even in the Bean Shoals area among others.

Much of the river bottom is carpeted with that green shit toward and after late summer. Much more of it is found in shallower areas.

The weed and green matter is not an issue at the Ronda/Elkin area unless things have changed at time of year, unless things have changed in the last few.  Just wasn't expecting this.  Had I known, I would've gone north.

Nymph style fishing just seem to be a good fit in a low seat position.  I have yet to replace the canoe seat with a custom seat that I plan to make at some point.  This will give me an extra 5 inches of height.  After 5 trips, I'm just now getting brave enough to cast while standing up.  It takes a considerable amount of finesse and balance to pull this off in a OT Guide 119.

Dave, your reports in the last 6 months have been both informative and fascinating.

It is doubtful I'll be able to wade much after age 50.  I'll joining club hoary head in a few, and will be floating about much more.  I have hope now these float trips will be interesting thanks to your thinking outside of the box.
