Title: Old Friend

J and I visited an old friend Saturday. It was a lovely day. The temps were awesome. Air and water. We fished a lower stretch that he had never fished - which boggled my mind. We got into brookies right away.

...and stayed into them as we went higher.

We were out and hiking back down about 3:30.
Jacob needed to rest up for his sketchy trip with Ken the next day.

Wife and girls are out of town for the week so I sent them off Saturday morning and Doug and I went and hit the local brookie stream.  Rain had the stream at a perfect level, especially for late September.

Lots of mayflies on this stream.  Several different varieties popping off.

Salami and some homemade sourdough bread.

Sulphur

Then finished out the bachelor day with some sourdough pizza.  Shiitake, hot and spicy sausage, pepperoni, and homemade marinara.

Nice trip, boys.

Jacob, are you certain on that sulfur ID?

Doug, can you hit me back with the tree ID request I sent you?

Pizza = baller.  But if you want to invoke some Emeril Legasse and "kick it up a notch", throw some shrimp and bleu cheese on there next time for some next level bliss.

I think it's a female light cahill, but mudwall will correct us all.

Great report!

Yes, I believe you are on the right track --- some kind of "Cahill" (Heptageniidae), perhaps Leucrocuta.  Specimen is in such poor shape from J's ham-handed collecting methods, who the heck can correctly ID this critter?

Mayflies are like a women's breast.  Follow this lead when collecting!

In the broadest terms in the fly angling vernacular, "sulphur" could be considered correct also.  Challenge of angler common names = approximately a dozen critters called "sulphur".    This use to infuriate me in my younger years; now I don't give a shit.

PS:  Had to look up "Emeril Legasse".  Can't believe any male with a functioning penis would be familiar with this individual.   Dude's Man Card has been revoked for 3 months.

I see a yellow mayfly and just assume Sulphur.  Looking at it, it is too yellow for a Sulphur.

And shrimp and bleu cheese would be interesting  V:;

Fine brook trout there!  :bow As far as I'm concerned, if it's a yeller mayfly, mighty as well call it a sulphur.

Sorry, I cannot refuse comment.

Big J is a fine angler, one of the most persistent anglers I have ever encountered.  I wish I had his angling drive, and the drive of folks like Doug, Ken, Boss, etc.  BUT, Big J's talents of biological description and ecological search image are limited to seeing a 6" brookie and its orientation in a translucent 30 centimeters of mountain stream water.  This is no fault of his.  His "yellow/sulphur" comment is what you get when you are trained number-cruncher transplanted to the wilds.

Down the shore the sulfurs look different. And though I've never seen a spotted weakfish eat one, good fall fishing often correlates well with the timing of the butterfly migration.

I have nothing to hide.  Back when I was a rank bachelor, I used to come home from work and watch Emeril Live, Good Eats, and Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals and then cook my dinner.  It is literally how I learned to cook (although I should throw back to my true very first cooking instruction show which was this show that came on the Va Tech cable channel back in the 90s called Half Baked hosted by some stoner from New England - he was hilarious).

And watch where you wade, Hiner.  It's risky business when you self appoint yourself the keeper of mandom, with authority (whether real or assumed) to award or revoke man-cards.  Now, I will pay my respects to you with regards to your knowledge of booby manipulation, seeing as how you've probably been able to complete your own studies on those jigglers hanging off your old man chest.

J, I am sorry for the sulphur (sulfur?) mess.  But, I ask you to take your angst up with Hiner.  Afterall, if it wasn't for him, I would never have made it beyond "yellow fly" at this stage in my trout angling journey.

I did not revoke your man-card.  I simply reported your emasculate comment to the appropriate Mandom MC committee of Aaron and Ben.  My MC was revoked more than a year ago.  I am now in Mandom's 7-step IAAP (I Am A Pussy) detoxification program.

Jokes aside, Big J opened the discussion with his yellow/sulphur remark.  An interesting thread would be a dialogue on angler common names.

Good night.  Watching the debate in hopes of a tutorial on paying $750 or less in federal taxes.

Peace.
