Fished with the bossman yesterday. Went exploring some new water for smallies. Being that I haven't fished for smallies in 2 years I was itching to catch some. Results were mediocre... But was a good time none the less. I did best on subsurface patterns, they didn't seem to be into topwater to much.

I did at the first spot. But those little fish weren't very fun on that heavy rod.

Went down to the river below the house this morning and chunked a foamy floating thingy for an hour or so and caught a few smallmouth until the fog burned off and the sun came out; then they quit hitting like you'd thrown a switch. Nothing much size, but these little guys are a lot of fun on a three-weight. They spend more time in the air than in the water when you hook up.

Dang, that's some big water! The Ivanhoe gauge was at 1050 cfs but that's plenty of water flowing over Foster Falls!
I thought I could do some damage with the Spey Pole but need to study them casting videos some more as there is a major flaw in my style.
The river beat me up and I only caught punes, Driver covered two or three times the water and had the better fish of the day.

Purdy scenery.

I wouldn't go back.  Too many other great places to fish.  You would have done better at Barnes Creek in the Uwharries.

I do not enjoy Hepatitis. I'll stick to the rivers and lakes that I am used too.

Shot up to WV Friday night for a few hours of fishing.  Fished hard for 3 hours with little to show for it.

My buddy kept fishing, I was sitting on a rock drinking beer at this point.

He was rewarded.

I leeched off his success...same pool, same rod, same fly, no more than 3 casts later another nice fish in the dark.

It was a reminder that I don't get up there enough.  Lots of 1-3' side channels with deep cuts towards the middle of the river..almost all of it worth fishing. Tricky wading, we both went nipples deep at one point trying to get to good spots. Beautiful area and an especially good one for the Civil War buffs around here.
