Title: Because the Carp need some love thread, 2016.
Post by: Dougfish on June 18, 2016, 17:28:47 PM

Yeah, I'm mainly a trout weenie. But the golden bones have always caught my attention.
Brood V 17 yr. cicada hatch was going on up in the hills. We had hoped a certain lake might be the scene of mass cicada suicide.
And it was so. These pics of mine are over a 9 day day period, 2 1/2 days on the water. Other co-conspirators will add their stories and pics.
It's a truly unique opportunity to catch these normally bottom feeders chowing down on nature's cheeseburgers from the sky. So we took advantage of that opportunity. Enjoy.

Last Saturday with Fin and Mudwall in a high-jacked sloow boat. VaTrout in his yak.

Some commons.

We called it a day and I began a search for a new boat ride for the upcoming week.  :P
I knew my boy driver liked his carp, so it did not take much to entice him. Aaron was sufficiently piqued to make the long drive, too.
The three of us fished Friday and today. We left Aaron at lunchtime to continue the fight with Jacob of the sloow boat.
No camping pics. We were three tired dudes sitting a picnic table drinking and talking fishing. Nothing to see there.

The bait we were imitating. And my flies. Everyone's were a little different. All got gobbled.

Most fish were 9 - 15 lbs and pulled like freight trains. 6 - 10 wts were in use. I even used two old 8 wt fiberglass. I enjoyed seeing the 40 year old work horses bent double. The party is about over up there. We heard and saw less bugs and fish today. But a cold front come through last night, too. I think Fin, who has been 3 or 4 times already, is going back Tuesday for another go.
If the word is good, I'll go back again. I'm sure I can find a partner or two. Every 17 years.

Good stuff! I have never actually intentionally caught a carp on a fly rod, but have caught a couple over the years while fishing for other species (and had a few on that I couldn't handle.) They are one of the hardest-fighting fish in freshwater for sure, remind me of redfish when you hook one.

No pics, but it was badass. 20 fish for the boat at least, 3 break offs, and probably 40 instances where they went to eat and missed the fly.  I also caught a frying pan sized bluegill.

Big fun, cool lake, they should make a straighter road into it though.

I'll add a few as well.  It's really hard to get a decent photo while sitting in a kayak with a 15lb carp laying in the floor!
I'll also say that SML carp have nothing on these guys!  Bigger fish, better fight all day long!

There's a reason for the winding, snaking roads.  It separates the spiritless moaning complainers from those grateful visionaries.   Keep your sorry ass in Dobson if you don't like the lay of the roads!!!!!

The north end of the lake is a stone's throw from my retirement home.   I now have a canoe (found an Old Town in Marlinton WV) and plan on using the lake at will.

I don't expect to see you peckerwoods in the area for another 17 years!!!!!

I'm wondering how summer carp fishing is on the lake. Goofy water color and I never saw any good flats in the limited areas I covered.

I will say that I did spend the last hour motoring around the lake trying to find you guys. I did see one Jon boat with two guys fly fishing in it. I thought, "those guys are way too skinny to be G and Erik." But I still motored over to make sure. Two guys from Roanoke. I think they said they put about a half dozen in the boat. I think we should of been up the lake like what you all did. You all found the fish.

Way too long.  Screw charcoal, I'm sticking with my butane grill when in the boat.  Wasted too much fishing time cooking those burgers.  They ended up tasting good though.

Trip 1: June 7

Well, as luck would have it, my number one customer loves to fish and even better, he owns a Ranger bass boat.  And better still, I was given the green light from our company Pres to take said customer cicada carp fishing just as much as he wanted to go.  No vacation days burned!  I had introduced said customer to the magic of catching carp on the surface with cicadas during the 2013 emergence at Smith Mountain Lake.  He was ready to go when I told him Moomaw was fishing well.  He is not a flyfisherman; he is however catching these fish on my flies fished as a dropper off a Tiny Torpedo.  You say cheating, I say inovation.  Works like a charm.

That first trip was without a doubt the most fun I have ever had with a fly rod in my hand.  Very little boat traffic that day, no one else targeting the carp except for a few bowfishers, who fortunately for the carp, were very poor shots.  The carp were really honed in on the big bugs and had not been stuck enough yet or gorged enough yet to offer refusals.  We caught fish after fish after fish.  Total for the day well over 50 with many fish over 15 pounds boated.

Traveled to the lake again with my fine fishing customer.  He graciously agreed to allow my father-in-law to come along.  I really wanted to expose this young 82 year old to the excitement of cicada carpin'.

After several failed hookups, he was finally into fish.

Trip 4: June 21

The chime of Brood V is fading and with it the surface feeding carp.  We still had a pretty good day going when a big, bad storm blew over the mountain.  Of course it rolled in right as the action was heating up.  We spent 2:30 until about 5:00 hanging out under the eave of the Coles Point bath house while the rain poured and the thunder rolled.

My first fish of the day was unexpected.  Landed what looked to be one of the mythical steelhead DGIF has been trying so hard to establish in this lake.  The thing rocketed out of the depths as my fly was trailing along behind the boat.  It missed the first time, I cast back, and wham!  The fish was as silver as an Atlantic salmon.  Tried to snap a quick pic but as I was reaching for the camera he jumped one more time earning his freedom without having to pose for a selfie.

Very few cruising carp on this day.  We primarily just prospected along the banks that had been productive on prior trips.  The sunfish would rush the fly and start peck, peck, pecking and then ol'e rubber lips would rise up from the depths to finish it off.

Brood V has been a blast.  Looking forward to 2033.

And that's a wrap.

Good!  Too much attention was heaped on my Shangri-La.  I am glad this 17 year intermittent episode is over!  I will however miss the singing.

It had to end. It did. With a thud.
Driver and I headed up Sat. AM for the final try. Fin had a productive day Tuesday and hey, it's only 5 days later, right?
Well, they call it fishing, not catching for a reason.
The highlands and WV got pounded by rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The lake level website showed it up 6" on Friday morning.
We get there and it's up 3'.  :o
But bugs are singing up on the ridge. Tallyho!

Well, we saw bugs in the water but few fish. Most we saw were suspended or deliberately slow cruising. No love.
I caught 3 smallmouth to keep the stink off. And we only had one hungry, feeding carp. He ate my fly, took me into submerged sycamore limbs and stayed on the line when I horsed him out. Nice fish! Five seconds later the line goes slack. Spit the bit. Fuck.
And that was that. We burned some gas, exercised the batteries, drank many beers, got checked by the friendly CPO's (all good, whew) and finally slunk on down the road.

The wife and kids attended a birthday party Saturday evening presenting me with a window of opportunity to chase river donkeys.  I loaded up the kayak and headed out.

Paddling along the first good rocky flat I spot my first target.  Anchor, secure paddle, cast, and BAM, fish on!

I spent the next 4 hours paddling around, hooking up with only one more donk that quickly unbuttoned.  I realized I had fallen victim yet again to the first cast/first fish curse.  It is real people...believe it.

I applaud you.  Was out last Saturday on SML looking for carp.  It was hot.  Found a couple nice flats and found two feeding carp but blew both of my shots.
