The Dude

I had to do some work on the outside of the house on Saturday, and after getting beat down by the sun, I decided that Sunday was a day for getting up high in the mountains where the temperatures wouldn't be quite so bad.  So, I told my partner to hop in the car and we hit the road to go get lost somewhere.

I got to the parking lot, got rigged up and set out by 8:30AM.  I just bought a new pair of boots and (foolishly) busted them out today to break them in.  I took a trail for a while and then just bushwhacked the last bit and was fishing by 9:30AM.  There was a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast, and once I started fishing, there was no turning back and I was committed to the end - rain or shine.

I started the day with a small green sallie dry fly with an ant dropped off the back.  The fish were mostly interested in the ant.  It wasn't too long before they changed their tastes to a 1970s Chinese pornstar - big, hairy and yellow.  The ole #10 stimulator.  I noticed that all of the fish I was catching had plump bellies, and I could actually feel something bulky in their stomachs on almost 90% of them.  I can't prove it, but I think the fish in this stream were gorging on crayfish.  I don't know if they are out molting right now or what.  I did see a few large dead crayfish in the water.  I didn't really want to squeeze their bellies too hard, but I did enough to feel something hard inside.  It was amazing how almost every one I caught had the same thing.

I caught this dragon fly right after he emerged.

Check this out.  I caught these two fish on the same fly.  The smaller one hit it first and as I was playing him, the bigger one started chasing it around trying to take the food from his mouth.  I ended up hooking them both.

This guy had some upchuck in his mouth, but I'm not exactly sure what it was.  I let him keep it despite my curiosity.

Biggest fish of the day and I jacked up the photo - a nice 12-incher.......well, I actually decided to break out the tape measure to see just how big this brute really was..........and it only measured in at 9-7/8".  Wow, I need to get my eyes checked, because I couldn't believe this fish wasn't even 10-inches.  It was fat, though.

I finally got to the end, where two springs come together to form the stream.  It was about 4pm and time to call it quits for the day.

From there, I had a little bit more bushwhacking before I hit the trail.  I was back at the car by 5pm and heading back home - wore the eff out.  It never did rain until I got to the car, thank goodness.

That is one of the best looking streams I have seen pics of on here.  Makes the yaker in me start to twitch...  Damn fine looking gradient!  Never heard of anyone catching 2 trout on the same fly like that before...

Nice man!

It was just a common water snake.  Incidentally, can anyone give me a bug ID on that spinner?  I'm guessing march brown.

Nice chunky brookies there, John! And 2 on one fly-I've never seen that before. Buck looks like he wants a bite of that sammich, or maybe the brookie in another pic. Great report as always! bd;0

Buddy, you were right about the snails.  That's got to be rough on the ole digestive track!   ???
