The Dude

I took a nice 4-day trip into the back country this weekend for a much needed escape from reality.

I got to the parking lot early on Friday and Buck Nasty and I hiked in to a predetermined campsite by 10:30.

Snagaluffagus and DownwiththeBrowns should have been well on their way and joining me shortly.  So, I set up camp in the rain and pretty much dicked around waiting for them.  After two hours of waiting, I couldn't wait and decided to go catch some fish near camp.  The guys showed up around 2pm, just before I came back off the water to check on things.  The weather finally broke and things began looking up quickly.  Once they got set up, we hit the water to catch some dinner.

Between the sauteed potatoes and onions and the fried trout, I was left feeling that I was standing in rarified culinary air next to DWB - the man can flat out make some tasty camping food (and he even does dishes - probably in his bloodlines).

Anyway, after a most satisfying meal and some good white liquor, we unwound and enjoyed each other's company by the campfire.  Man, you just can't beat that.  The best part about it - we were the only two cars in the parking lot that day and we didn't see another person all day.

DWB and Snag woke up early Saturday morning and left to fish while letting me sleep in.  The only thing was, I didn't know that's what they did.  So, I woke up and started making breakfast and milling about camp while under the impression that they were sleeping in their tents.  I killed time quietly for a few hours, all the while thinking to myself, "Son of a.......these dudes sleep their lives away.  If they don't get up soon, I'm just going to go fishing by myself."

About two and a half hours later, they come walking back into camp from fishing, and I about shit my pants.  Oh well, there was still many more hours of daylight to fish.  And fish we did.

Snag had a nice one get away from him in this run.

Saturday night was more of the same good eats and the appearance of 5 mini bottles of Jim Beam.  That got the conversation flowing.  Once the fireside action slowed down, we brewed some Sleepytime tea, took some benadryl/advil/tylenol and retired for the night.

One tired-ass dog.

Snag and DWB broke camp and headed for home Sunday morning and I decided I hadn't had enough, so I decided to stay another night.

I made it about 3 miles upstream of base camp and the fishing was beyond incredible up until noon.  Things slowed down after that and the sun had the temperatures steadily climbing, so I gave up around 3pm and headed back to camp for the night.

These next two shots are of the "big fish" of the trip.  Naturally, the nicest fish had the crappiest photos.  I put the tape measure to it and it read 14" on the dot.  But believe me when I say this, that fish was chunky for a 14-incher.

While I missed the camaraderie of the guys around camp Sunday night and Monday morning, Buck Nasty made for quality companionship.

(Faggy disclaimer): Sorry if I fill up too many trip reports with gay photos of my dog, but he's as good of a fishing partner as it gets, and an even better friend.  Knowing that I came within a few seconds from having to put him down makes me value his company more than ever.

Time to head back home to real life.

I packed up and hiked back out on Monday morning, exhausted, yet as happy as I've been in a long time.  Despite the four-day layer of filth, grime and odor, my body felt cleansed and my mind was completely refreshed.  These are the events that you can't reproduce and will always look back on fondly.  Even though it only takes a bit of effort to take trips like this and the destination is right in our backyard, they just seem to only happen every once in a while.  Maybe that is what makes them so special.

And, as if that wasn't already overkill, hopefully Snag will double up on this trip report with photos and accounts of events of his own.  Work is going to seem like a total bore tomorrow - but at least it is only four more days until the next weekend.   ;)
I was born by the river in a little tent, And just like the river I've been running ever since, It's been a long, long time coming, But I know change is gonna come.

Woolly Bugger

The fish in the frying pan made me drool on the key board, and that brown was nice!

Great report-Sounds like you guys got your batteries recharged on an epic Memorial weekend trip! That fried trout sure looks tasty.

For me, it's my last day of school tomorrow, so I have definite plans to ramp up the summer schedule. This holiday weekend, for my fishing sins, I had to catch up on the yardwork before the neighbors finally get serious about the petition. :P Some great ribs and PBR's are helping ease the pain.

BTW-Thanks for your service!

Good stuff there boys 'c; Looks like a nice trip :) I like the dog photos, but woo-wee is right, crop that Smuffy dude out ;D

Damn fine report!  Looks like a great trip!!

How old is the dog?  I keep seeing her in all of your post great looking animal!  How hard was it to train him(?) to sleep in the tent with you?

Man, that looks like a hell of a trip.  Great camping, hiking, good company, and great fishing to top it off.  I'm super jealous of you guys.

Woolly, trust me I would have much rather have ran into these guys instead of the roughneck yocals we encountered yesterday...although their machete with teeth on the back looks kinda rough.  That would have come in handy yesterday as I'm sure Peter could attest to.

Nicely done Snag, I had made plans to meet with a bud to fish a region I haven't hounded in years. I found fly fishing Nirvana and it looks like y'all did too! Sorry I couldn't meet up with you lads. We have the rest of the year to plan something -0-

Get Bent

Pretty solid stuff there.. But I have two questions.....

1.) Snag backpacks  :-* ?

2.) What happened to being Mr. Hardcore and packing all you need in your vest  :P ?
