Title: Looking for new streams
Post by: hermz on March 07, 2007, 08:35:48 AM
Hello everyone,

I am a newbie and I just moved from Virginia to the Greensboro area about 6 months ago. In VA I had the luxury of driving less than an hour to some of the best streams in the state. That obviously is no longer the case. I still make the drive to some of these streams but with the increasing price in gas these days, its starting to take a toll. I was wondering if there were any good streams that weren't 2+ hours away. I've heard the Smith is good but I have only fished it one time and I never seem to have any luck on the Dan (in the special regulation area). If anyone could steer me towards some good fishing I would really appreciate it.

I'm in Winston-Salem, here is my short list (close to home)

1. Smith River
2. Dan River
3. Stone Mt. State Park (Roaring River) Stocked DH
4. Mitchell River Stocked DH

anything else is another hour or two away.....but worth the drive...

S. Holston TN
Watauga TN
Davidson River
Tuckaseegee River

Thanks for the info....

And don't worry I never keep what I catch. I just enjoy catching trout, admiring how pretty they are and then they go back.

hermz..... I live ten min from the smith and in the winter it is very tough but wait till the spring and summer months and you should do well, i use an elk hair caddis with a brassie dropper and do well, in the summer through a japanese beetle imitation and you should have good luck, i also fish the Dan regularly and the only thing i use there is nymphs, anything beadhead. There are also many small creeks scattered around the smith and the dan check out the Va fish and game page.
