Post by: Woolly Bugger on September 19, 2007, 13:49:02 PM
This is a just a short video clip of the Madison where I caught the brown pictured below... it'll give you an idea of the stream flow....  ;D

Madison River Video Clip (http://info.kbrcomm.com/video/madisonbrown.html)

The River IS a lot bigger than it looks in the video as there isn't anything to scale it against....

Looks really clear!  Can you wade across, or is that an illusion too?

Man, that is some beautiful water. It really makes me want to get back home, as I am originally from there.

Paul, there is no way  :o to wade across that flow!  :o Three steps towards the middle of the river and you'd be in hip deep water and the current would carry you several miles downstream.  :o I was using 2 - 4 AB shots on the river!

Can't remember the cfs but it was a LOT, the water was up in the grass. The water right behind the bolder was chest deep!

I remember when I fished there a few years ago.  We took about 4 steps into the river and cast to the bank.  It was all we could do to keep from floating down stream.

This pic will give you some sense of the size of the river. I shot this from a gravel bar that lead about 1/4 to 1/3 of across the river. You are looking back upstream.

OK, down river from the Raynolds Pass Bridge, or between $3 Bridge and Raynolds. I thought you might have walked up river from $3. I know about where you are. Was it during mid to late July? They raised the river then to cool the Madison in Bear Trap Canyon.

The Madison was roaring.

Yep, late July and I was tossing 2 - 4 AB shot to get 'em... Challenging to be sure....

I was there at the same time. Here are some pictures that show how high the water was compared to normal flows.

Here's a strong wader from Georgia that was able to wade out to a boulder above below Slide Inn as the flows were decreasing. He would have not made it 3 days earlier when the flows were about 500 cfs higher. Look at the white water just beyond him. Without that boulder, he'd be taking a bath.

Here's the area below $3.00 bridge during July of 2006. Notice the uncovered boulders in the river and close to the bank.

Here's the same area during July of 2007. The boulders are covered. I would guess the river was 18 inches higher. It may look calm but it was tough to hold your position just a few feet out unless you were behind a boulder.
