Flows are still too much for my taste - if you are in shallow water in areas where it is fairly wide you have no problem but you should be aware that the water is about a foot higher then normal all over so wading even in the easy spots is limited.

I agree.  I tried it last week and had to use caution.  Wading upstream is tough.

If anybody want to tag along on one of my jaunts, just holler, I'm kind of a pansy wader, so you shouldn't have a problem wading where I fish, jis say'in

I'll be back on the smith after the 4th of July!

Sitting at the bar chatting with the server and getting nowhere, I decided that it was time for me to get back on the river. Headed up north with an eighth of a tank, hoping to get into some cheap Virginia gas. Filled up and picked up a sixer of NB citradelic, a snad and a powerball ticket. Lunch on the river = winning!

Back to the local and the unofficial greeting committee.  They had to dump some water, so the river hasn't been fishable for the last several week, now it's ratcheted down to where wading isn't a problem and I went to see what bugs would be showing up despite the forecast for afternoon thunder storms.  It was a hot and humid walk in waders, but the 48 degree water temps made them necessary.

On the way in I spied a new crop of Train Wreckers, planned to harvest on the way out.

After the hike it I popped a bottle and waded waist deep into the cold water, the dogs laid in the shallows. I sat and watched the water, while sharing my snad with my companions.

Just a few bugs on the water, and no fish rising, so for the fun of it I tied on a mutuka, but nobody was interested. Finally spied a few rising fish and switched to a dry.

It was nice to catch these pune browns on a Tuesday afternoon as the sky darkened behind the ridge and thunder rumbled.

A light rain began to fall but I didn't feel like I was getting any wetter as the humidity was at least 70%. Raindrops spotted the river but not enough to curtail dry fly activities. It lasted about an hour, then the sun came back out and I continued to fish.

Taking a beer / photo beak from time to time. I only brought 4 beers with me, an attempt at self limits.

The fog began to roll down the river and out of the mist paddlers appeared.

There was a little sulfur hatch between 6 and 8 and I continued to catch the Smith River Punes.

I opened the last Critridelic, took a healthy swig and stashed it in a vest pocket. Moving around and casting, to horrors the bottle fell into the river spewing precious beer into the river. It was ruined. So when the river shut down around 7:30 I bailed.

Good to be back on the home waters, and as I post this at lunch, I'm thinking about skipping out and doing it again.

2016 63

Finished up work at 2 o'clock, (well not actually finished, but enough done that I could put the rest off till today), and was up on the water 4:30. Checked the radar, looked good to me.

Picked up a sixer in cans, I like cans, but this Blowing rock IPA actually blows and not in a good way. I had to force myself to drink the second, the third was tolerable, and the fourth tasted okay, I guess.  The shower had passed and the skies were clearing, but the fog on the river was thick.

Forgot the TG-3, had to use the cell phone, only got one fish pic, a stocked rainbow, one of two caught last evening and only the 3rd that I've caught in the wild brown water. Landed about a ten pune, but colorful browns.

The hatch was mixed with midges, sulfurs, and bwos. I tried 4 different patterns, in 3 sizes and got refused by more fish than I caught, I could get 'em to rise, just not to eat. So a big FU goes out to the fog and finicky fish tonight.

I only take sure thing beer when fishing. Often, the fish aren't a sure thing.  'c;  -+;

I thought about tying on a trailer but was convinced I would get enough on the dry, the trouble was the fog as everything past 12 feet was pretty fuzzy

It is still quite high compared to normal July levels w/o generation.....

You youngsters might want to take a wading staff or wait for your balls to drop.

The wading isn't difficult at all especially compared to the waters in Montana, they would just laugh at the smith even at 400!
