Looks like a pretty easy fly to fling.  I've been out a few times this fall/winter, but conditions have sucked.  Can't line up a time to be on the river when it isn't 20 mph winds, bone dry, or pumping chocolate milk.  Nice musky too  /'/

2016 – 98

Shortly after posting up my YIR I got a text from TX, "We need to get a musky in that collage.
Wanna fish w/ me tomorrow?"

Out the door at 6:30 for a 10:00 start.

Guests are not allowed to view images in posts, please Register or Login

We headed on down to the river

Cast and cast and cast some more, TX had two eats, and I had one follow, first for me, brought it right into to the boat, and I'm thinking, "What the fuk do I do now, oh yeah, figure 8!" Fish spooked when I turned the fly back into its face, my bad!

The day ended like this...

watch in HD... <-;:

After casting my arm off I did some elbow stretches at the Oskar Blues before driving back down to the piedmont.

I dont want to bogart your thread Drifts, but figured Id add a few images here because I dont have enough for my own thread, plus they're on topic.

Didn't take a ton of photos this year, and Im not sure why because it's not like I was busy catching fish.

Me, my buddy Austin (ARonthefly) and my friend David teamed up this year. Davids got a sweet Towee with a jet, so it was pretty fun cruising around in that thing.

We did see some big fish, but they just kept swimmin'. That's musky fishing. I did win a sweet rod in the raffle, however.
Can't wait to do it again.

Meh.

Beginner's luck.  I have caught em before by accident. One on gear many many, many years ago. Another on a bugger whilst fishing for smallmouth. Both under 2'. This is the first one I got deliberately targeting them. I only have 3 days of fishing for them  under my belt.

I had a goal to get one before I start PA school. It happened sooner than I thought, so maybe I try for an allegheny river monster this summer.

2019 – 12

Troutfanatic said that he was planning of a musky trip with Drifts and there was a seat open. So I agreed to join them on a Saturday adventure.

We planned to meet at the Huddle house and ride the next two hours together meeting Drifts at the take-out on the James.

We were about 15 minutes early, but I told TF not to worry as the Drifts is usually early and there he was getting the boat ready as we pulled into the lot.

At the launch, I noticed that the "mechanic's" car has a check engine light on.... Jis say'in

Big ass otter patrolling the bank..

We also spotted a pair of juvenile bald eagles along the way.

Cast, strip, figure 8, repeat.

And then TF had a follow and got him chasing after the fly as he worked the rod around and around, but then it was gone. Drifts rowed us back and filled with anticipating we floated through that spot again. Boom the fish hit TF's fly!

After that we stuck TF on the sticks and continued on till the end of the day without seeing another fish.

Well it should be prime time here in the greater Cumberland River drainage to be putting fish in the boat, but to be honest it's been pretty slow, even moving fish, let alone boating one.

ARontheFly and I tried last week. Got started early, on a nice chilly morning.

Was lunch by the time we got where we were headed.
Some of the water looked pretty good.

Musky float. Cold. Water level was good. Too clear? Sun to start, clouds at close.
Only saw one other bote. Jet with gear chuckers. They got one.

New guy. (None of you usual suspects would get off your asses. )
We did this. Pound the banks. A lot.

Stripped. A lot.

I drank. A few.

We(He) got cold, and new guy had to use an island to walk some blood back into his feet.

We saw bald eagles, hawks, woodpeckers, other birds. No Muskies. Liking the new oar shafts even more.
Bote adjustments were good. Skunkage was not.
Bote is in the barn. Sand bags are in the bed of the truck. Bird feeders are full. Load of wood at the back door.
Redneck Christmas lights are up out back. Wine glass is full. Sweetie is making a hearty dinner. All good.

No more adjustments. All good. Not the lightest or most nimble craft. Bull in a china shop nimble.
Very stable fishing platform, though. You can stand anywhere on it's 5 ft. width and it's stable.
Needs much more fish slime for mojo.

9,000 casts remain in my attempt at catching the fish of 10,000 casts.  Left Richmond around 7:30 and headed west to meet my dad in the Valley.  Snow the night before left some nice scenery on the drive up.

Having never tried to catch a Musky, we knew our chances were slim to none.  But, yesterday was a nice January day and what better way to spend it than floating on the Shenandoah?  My dad wanted to row, so I remained up front trying to keep flies in the water.

Despite no follows, fish sightings or strikes, it was still a great time.  The hope of a large predatory fish following or striking the fly was enough to make it worthwhile.  We explored some new water, and will certainly be back if water levels and weather cooperate.

Just a few photos...

I've had follows and been in boats that caught fish but not one hookup yet — one day!

Haha thanks!  He took a few casts but he has become very interested in Switch and Spey casting.  He takes a trip to Canada for Atlantic Salmon most years, and thats the way most folks fish up there.

Im hoping to pick up on the Spey cast, just finished a 12 rod for a 4 weight line..

Weather was great last weekend but no eats, just a few lazy follows for J Miller and I.

The rivers blew out from rains during the middle of this week but then back down to fishable levels by this morning. So J Miller and I hit the water again.

Some 3 am go juice.

Wasn’t taking pictures today, temps reported low-mid 40’s. The coldest mid 40’s day I can ever remember fishing... rain, wind, zero sun. My kinda weather, but a few breaks in the rain would’ve been nice.

After too many months of not touching a musk... a fish appears, solid follow, then ran out of room to strip and went into figure 8. Fish disappears into the depths below the boat, Hail Mary mode- I lay out a wide figure 8, fly disappears into the depths and I can only hope. Then just as the fly comes back in to view; musky slam!

J Miller on the net work, we were motivated as this was early in the day but weather got progressively nasty and no more fish sited.

Can’t wait to make the next cast.
