Title: Unlimited Dead People; R.I.P
Post by: Woolly Bugger on October 04, 2017, 11:28:57 AM
about time for this, we've lost many legends in the recent years.

Starting off with Tom Petty who was part of the fabric of our lives...

Here is Tom Petty in concert from 1977 San Francisco!

These two young lads had much going for them.  I'll refrain from ranting about drugs and alcohol.

Absolutely breathtaking music by Jeff Buckley

From the loins of Hank Williams.....

One day I'll wake and all my music makers of my youth and beyond will be gone.
Or I'll be gone.
TP's passing hurts.
Dammit Ken. Buckley hurts.
The list is long.
My iPod is half eulogy and trilogy.

After a couple decades of playing music semi-professionally, I realized that most of the best singers and musicians were also mostly incurable alcoholics or junkies.

Same for comedians which has always fascinated me considering most of what they put out is hilarious.  being in touch with the dark side of human nature produces great art.  unfortunately it's hard to constrain.

Chick Corea dead at 79

We we fortunate to see him at Wait Chapel in 2019!

>>> The keyboardist, composer and bandleader Chick Corea — one of the most revered figures in contemporary jazz, but whose work spanned fusion to classical — died on Feb. 9 at age 79.

Dan Muse from Chick Corea Productions confirmed his death to NPR on Thursday afternoon. Corea's team also reported his death on social media, saying that he died from "a rare form of cancer which was only discovered very recently." No other details about his illness and death were shared.

The singer and guitarist Jimmy Johnson, who has died aged 93, was one of the wonders – if sometimes half-hidden – of the blues world, both for his elegant, passionate singing and for his clean-cut, inventive guitar playing. In the 1960s and 70s he established himself in the clubs of Chicago, one of the generation of musicians such as Magic Sam, Otis Rush and Freddie King who would reshape the blues for a new world and new audiences.

It was Gary Brooker, the founder of the rock band Procol Harum, who taught Clapton to fly fish. Brooker lived a few miles away from Clapton and explained to him that fly-fishing was different — it was a psychological victory over a trout or salmon. Presenting a fly to a fish without spooking it was most of the challenge.

Lisa Loring, best known for bringing Wednesday Addams to life in The Addams Family sitcom in the mid-1960s, has died. She was 64.

Loring's close friend Laure Jacobson shared in a Facebook post news of her death on January 28 after the actor was taken off life support following "a massive stroke."

"It is with great sadness that I report the death of our friend, Lisa Loring. 4 Days ago she suffered a massive stroke brought on by smoking and high blood pressure. She had been on life support for 3 days. Yesterday, her family made the difficult decision to remove it and she passed last night," Jacobson informed on the social media post

After The Addams Family, Loring, who was born Lisa Ann DeCinces in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands on February 16, 1958, went on to make appearances on multiple shows like The Phyllis Diller Show, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., Fantasy Island, Barnaby Jones and As the World Turns, where she had a recurring role as Cricket Montgomery.

Richard Belzer, a comedian known for his role as cynical "Law & Order" detective John Munch, has died at 78 — his last words as edgy as his long career: "Fuck you, motherfuker."

Belzer died early Sunday at his home in Bozouls, France, his pal and writer Bill Scheft told The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor was famous for his role as the grizzled and wise-cracking Munch, appearing on multiple shows, including "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Law & Order: SVU," and had cameos in other shows like "The X Files."

Zizemore was a god actor, but he had the "troubles". I hate it for anyone when substance abuse (drugs/alcohol) takes them so early. You can usually see it coming. My brother and several of my friends started struggling in their teens and proceeded to destroy their lives and the one's who loved them. It's almost like a connect the dot or fill in the blank game. It follows a fairly predictable path. Trouble at school, work, jail, prison, hospital, and lastly dead.

RIP Billy "The Kid" Emerson (December 21, 1925 – April 26, 2023), aged 97

https://youtu.be/i2SRmaTUzNs

Billy "The Kid" Emerson, a blues singer, songwriter and pianist who wrote the rock-and-roll standard "Red Hot" and was one of the first performers on Sun Records, a label that later launched Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, died April 25 at a nursing home in Tarpon Springs, Fla. He was 97.

His son, Anthony Emerson, confirmed the death but did not provide a cause.

Mr. Emerson lacked a national profile as a solo performer, but his records were regional hits and extensively covered by others.

Bob Dylan took the guitar line from Mr. Emerson's "If Lovin' Is Believing" for his 2020 song "False Prophet." Presley covered Mr. Emerson's Sun recording "When It Rains It Pours" in 1957.

Then there is "Red Hot," his most enduring composition. The infectious song, with lyrics rooted in schoolyard taunts ("My gal is red hot, your gal ain't doodley squat") proved irresistible to a generation of rock-and-rollers.

East Bay music icon Chris Strachwitz, founder of Arhoolie Records, dies at 91

Chris Strachwitz, a nationally renowned musicologist who founded Arhoolie Records in El Cerrito and helped preserve and popularize the work of scores of authentic American roots musicians, died Friday at age 91, his label reported.

Reports said Strachwitz died peacefully at his Marin County home surrounded by friends and family. The cause of death was listed as complications due to congestive heart disease, according to NOLA.com, which noted that the famed music historian's passing came just hours after he was paid special tribute at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the famed annual event that celebrates the genres of music Strachwitz devoted his life to preserving. NOLA.com also reported that festival organizers had planned a second line — a traditional New Orleans-style funeral — for Strachwitz on Sunday afternoon.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/east-bay-music-icon-chris-strachwitz-founder-of-arhoolie-records-dies-at-91/ar-AA1aRZuY

Strachwitz formed Arhoolie Records in 1960, 13 years after emigrating with his family to the U.S. from Germany. He had fallen hard for the raw rhythms, melodies and passion of American roots musicians and made it his life's purpose to preserve and document their songs.

After finishing a stint with the U.S. Army, Strachwitz settled in the Bay Area, learned the essentials of recording music and reportedly traded some of his treasured 78 rpm record collection for recording equipment.

Arhoolie Records' first release, issued in 1960, was a field recording from rural Texas bluesman Mance Lipscomb, "Texas Sharecropper and Songster."

Astrud Gilberto, who struck fame with 'The Girl From Ipanema,' dies at 83
She released more than 15 albums and compilations over four decades but remained best known for her accidental hit

Astrud Gilberto, a Brazilian singer whose impromptu cameo performing lyrics in English on "The Girl From Ipanema" catapulted her to global fame and defined the whisper-smooth mellowness of the bossa nova sound in the 1960s, died June 5 at her home in Philadelphia. She was 83.

Her son Gregory Lasorsa confirmed the death but did not provide a cause.

Ms. Gilberto's style — breathy tones and gentle phrasing that fell like a soft rain — was perfectly suited for the cool sophistication of bossa nova, literally meaning new wave, which fused American jazz and Brazil's traditional samba music. She never described the "The Girl From Ipanema" as her favorite song, but said she was happy it gave the world a "dreamy distraction

Arkin was in many great movies, but I particularly enjoyed his performances in The Kominsky Method opposite Michael Douglas. Perhaps at my age I appreciated the jokes more than a younger audience without the same aches and pains that I shared with the characters in the series, but this was good acting in any event.

Man, more keep dying that I grew up watching...  Perhaps there's a lesson there.  :-\

Tony Bennett saw racism and horror in World War II. It changed him.

What were the chances? Thousands of miles from home, in a foreign land devastated by war, old friends bumped into each other on the street.

It was Thanksgiving Day, 1945, when two U.S. Army soldiers met unexpectedly in Mannheim, Germany. Part of the occupation force in a conquered city that had been leveled by Allied bombing during World War II, they had sung together only a few years earlier in a musical group back in high school in New York City.

The young men decided to spend the rest of the day together, attending a church service and then having a turkey dinner. At least, that was the plan. Their impromptu reunion was cut short just before the meal.

Roger Sprung, Banjo Virtuoso of N.Y.C. Folk Scene, Dies at 92
The "godfather" of progressive bluegrass, he grew up in New York, honed his skills in the mountains and flourished in Greenwich Village in the '60s.

Roger Sprung, a banjo virtuoso and key figure in New York's midcentury folk music revival, whose innovative picking and genre-mashing audacity earned him the unofficial title of the godfather of progressive bluegrass, died on July 22 at his home in Newtown, Conn. He was 92.

His death was confirmed by his wife, Nancy Sprung.

A New York City native who honed his skills early on by playing mountain music festivals in Virginia and the Carolinas, Mr. Sprung began his career in the parks and folk clubs in and around Greenwich Village and went on to become an inspiration for the modern bluegrass known as newgrass.

In the late 1950s, he played with a folk trio, the Shanty Boys, who recorded for Elektra Records. He later performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and made appearances on television in the 1960s backing the popular country and pop singer Kay Starr on programs like "The Jimmy Dean Show."

Robbie Robertson, 80, Dies; Canadian Songwriter Captured American Spirit
As the chief songwriter and guitarist for The Band, he offered a rustic vision of his adopted country that helped inspire the genre that came to be known as Americana.

Robbie Robertson, the chief composer and lead guitarist for the Band, whose work offered a rustic vision of America that seemed at once mythic and authentic, in the process helping to inspire the genre that came to be known as Americana, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 80.

His manager, Jared Levine, said he died after a long illness.

The songs that Mr. Robertson, a Canadian, wrote for the Band used enigmatic lyrics to evoke a hard and colorful America of yore, a feat coming from someone not born in the United States. With uncommon conviction, they conjured a wild place, often centered in the South, peopled by rough-hewed characters, from the defeated Confederate soldier in "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" to the tough union worker of "King Harvest Has Surely Come" to the shady creatures in "Life Is a Carnival."

Another one that I always migrated towards.  Somewhere, at multiple times, over my 66+ years, his lyrics and voice stirred me to the core.

Oh snap!

Jimmy Buffett, the singer-songwriter and Mayor of Margaritaville, the mythical paradise of tropical breezes, frozen cocktails and laid-back escapism that inspired his greatest hit and fostered a hugely successful branding and business empire, died Friday. He was 76.

Kissinger Dead At 100!

Henry A. Kissinger, the scholar-turned-diplomat who engineered the United States' opening to China, negotiated its exit from Vietnam, and used cunning, ambition and intellect to remake American power relationships with the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War, sometimes trampling on democratic values to do so, died on Wednesday at his home in Kent, Conn. He was 100.

His death was announced in a statement by his consulting firm.

Few diplomats have been both celebrated and reviled with such passion as Mr. Kissinger. Considered the most powerful secretary of state in the post-World War II era, he was by turns hailed as an ultrarealist who reshaped diplomacy to reflect American interests and denounced as having abandoned American values, particularly in the arena of human rights, if he thought it served the nation's purposes.

He advised 12 presidents — more than a quarter of those who have held the office — from John F. Kennedy to Joseph R. Biden Jr. With a scholar's understanding of diplomatic history, a German-Jewish refugee's drive to succeed in his adopted land, a deep well of insecurity and a lifelong Bavarian accent that sometimes added an indecipherable element to his pronouncements, he transformed almost every global relationship he touched.

At a critical moment in American history and diplomacy, he was second in power only to President Richard M. Nixon. He joined the Nixon White House in January 1969 as national security adviser and, after his appointment as secretary of state in 1973, kept both titles, a rarity. When Nixon resigned, he stayed on under President Gerald R. Ford.

Denny Laine, band member of Moody Blues and Wings, dies at 79
With the Moody Blues, he sang lead on the group's breakthrough hit, "Go Now"

Denny Laine, a British singer, songwriter and guitarist who performed in an early, pop-oriented version of the Moody Blues and was later Paul McCartney's longtime sideman in the ex-Beatle's solo band Wings, died Dec. 5 in Naples, Fla. He was 79.

The cause was interstitial lung disease, according to an announcement on Laine's Instagram page by his wife, Elizabeth Hines.

Mr. Laine's death comes almost exactly 50 years after the release of McCartney's acclaimed "Band On the Run" album, on which Mr. Laine played guitar and provided backing vocals.

Mr. Laine was born Brian Frederick Arthur Hines on Oct. 29, 1944, in the Channel Islands and grew up in Tyseley, England. He changed his professional name in his early teens, in part in homage to pop singer Frankie Laine.

In 1964, around the time he turned 20, he joined Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder in forming the Moody Blues and sang lead on the group's breakthrough hit, "Go Now."

Norman Lear, who brought social commentary to the sitcom, dies at 101
Archie Bunker, Maude Findlay and George Jefferson were among the characters he brought to America's living rooms

Norman Lear, the TV writer and producer who transformed the bland porridge of situation comedy into a zesty stew of sociopolitical strife and brutally funny speech and who gave the world such embattled comic archetypes as Archie Bunker, Fred Sanford, Maude Findlay and George Jefferson, died Dec. 5 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 101.

A family spokeswoman, Lara Bergthold, announced the death but did not provide an immediate cause.

Mr. Lear's entertainment career spanned the late 1940s to the 21st century, and he also found prominence in later life as a liberal political activist. But his legend was sealed in the 1970s, when he created a handful of shows that transformed the television medium into a fractious national town meeting and showcased the American family in all its hopes and dysfunctions.

Randy Sparks, who gave folk music a big choral sound, dies at 90
The New Christy Minstrels founded by Mr. Sparks became a steppingstone for a host of future stars including Kenny Rogers

https://youtu.be/PfxgbsXeTdE

Randy Sparks, a folk music maestro who crafted choral odes, ballads and ditties of droll wit such as "Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio" during the 1960s folk revival and who nurtured a host of future stars including Kenny Rogers and John Denver, died Feb. 11 in San Diego. He was 90.

Mr. Sparks had health problems including heart trouble, said his son, Cameron Sparks. Mr. Sparks, who lived in Mokelumne Hill, Calif., was under medical care at his son's home.

Amid the range of folk and roots music that flourished before the rock revolution — from the activist strains of Pete Seeger to the pop-style sound of the Kingston Trio — Mr. Sparks flexed his versatility. He defied easy labeling as a songwriter and leader of troupes including the New Christy Minstrels and the Back Porch Majority.
