Im just tired of looking at fish.
I'll play even though I'm no where near professional or even amateur. Here are some pictures I took messing around in the snow with the Canon.

My humble offerings. I'm starting this with the hopes that the big guns will drop in and throw up some shots. Wouldn't mind seeing some of BRA's Trains and Graffiti as well. I bet ODA's got something to add. Might get some surprises from the more quite members too.

J,
Ive heard that shooting white on white (the snow) is the toughest composure to get right. I hope I can find some to play with maybe up on the parkway on Wednesday.

That's what I've been told. The pictures are a little dull. I've been wanting to take a photography class at a local college, but I don't have the time.

One of the issues you are always going to have with snow from a photographic composition standpoint is contrast. There just isn't much contrast, everything is white. It is similar to taking pictures of green leaved mountains in the summer sun versus those same mountains in the fall, you need color contrast to make everything pop and give photos some depth.
I got some I can post later. Good idea.
Thanks for that link snag. I know what I'll be spending a couple hours tonight doing ;D

^THIS
Was what I meant to say.
Composure? What the fuck is composure? A mix of composition and exposure? Those Black-Smiths had me a better hold on me than I thought last night.
".......we model the behavior we teach, that is, we respond respectfully and kindly through words, modeling composure, cooperation, and compassion."
I believe composure is part of the Baptist Doctrine. But, what the heck do I know?!?!? I am still trying to figure out that dinosaur, fossil, human, and star nexus.
Some of you take very interesting photos. I enjoy!!!!!

I dug up and scanned some OLD family photos a few months back...these are much more interesting than anything else in my library. This is my grandfather.

Some fun with RAW
Still learning the camera and trying to figure out post, but it frustrates me. New computer with more RAM and Lightroom is in the future (after I get a few more lenses and a shot gun for hunting grouse this fall; oh yeah, and a new house and everything the wife wants in it. For now its a slow laptop (the one which when purchasing many years ago I yelled at the salesman saying "I don't need all that shit I just want to write papers (I thought I wanted to be a writer at one time but I trail off too much before I finish the original thought and it takes me forever to get back around to it; you know Thompson and Kerouac did it why cant I..right? Where was I??? Oh yeah, hear -> and surf the internet I don't take pictures"...I'm a dick sometimes). For now its the Silkypix that came with the camera to get to JPEG then a final touch with Picasa.
These are some RAW files I had laying around that I decided to play with tonight.

Nice. My computer took a shit so it's iPhone pics for me for a while. I've always liked photoshop....but it's all I've ever used and the price was right. I also do nothing but work and think about work right now, and it's boring and not very photo worthy. I need to go to sleep. And I need a bigger keypad thingy on my phone because my fingers are huge and covered in dried blood and scratchy things.
Lightroom will change your world.
Love the B&W pic!

Picasa is free, will process RAW files, and does a pretty good job.
If you ever look at SCOF Im pretty sure thats all those guys use from the appearance of the pics.
Its far more limited than photoshop (we have photoshop at...well the shop) but works good for plain ole JPEG files.
Whats the rub with photo shop?

Whoops, no rub ... meant to say Photobucket. I use photoshop elements to edit (the cheap version) ..question was in reference to photo sharing websites.
Flickr has a free version where you can post only so many per day and only up to 200 pics before they become unavailable.
It's cheaper than SmugMug but doesn't have all the features of SM either.
I like zenfolio.com, 500px.com, and smugmug (and others).
When it comes to photo editing software, Adobe pretty much rules.
Most of the tools you will ever need can be found in Lightroom and you do not need the full version of PS. Elements is pretty good, but LR gives you a better ability to navigate through a complete catalog(s) and actually organize everything.
I'm almost to the point where I plan to do the Creative Cloud thing and have access to all of the Creative Suite programs.
Currently available for the 1st year @ $30/month and then it goes back up to $50/month.
If I could just shoot a little bit more and get paid for it . . .

I'm about through with photobucket as well. The latest update is just screwy and the [IMG] code now has some goofy [URL] in front of it.
Picasa is the bomb for dummies, like me. Free!
Nice pics, Snag.
I started using Flickr about a year ago for storing my pics online. I paid a little bit extra for the annual subscription, about $20 I think, but it has no limits on uploads, etc. Generally no complaints overall.
Gracias, senores.

ODA - I used to rent a room from a guy in my poor Colorado days. Old hippie had every NatGeo from the early 70s to now. We didn't have cable so needless to say i would thumb a random copy from time to time. Really cool to see the car ads and read about shit i learned in social studies. The photos are always top notch too.
Some cool shots someone showed me today and thought this would be a fitting place for them even though they aren't mine.

Thanks man...most of those are roughly 4-5 years old, i need to get back at it.
I make a point to look all the way through this thread about once a week just to remind me of the talent on here.
I've seen a worse group of photographers post crappier pics on a photography board than I have on this board.
I leave this Friday for Ecuador and can hardly wait to see what images I capture and can post specifically into this thread.
I just wish there was fishing involved on this trip.
Oh, and I have a day planned on a stream the 25th of this month . . . I hate having to plan fishing trips like that, but it will be worth it!
Not a great pic, but a cool subject. Hemlock varnish shelf.

Some GREAT pictures in this thread I, also, love this thread and have throughly enjoyed thumbing thru the pages!:) Been away from these boards, for a few years but have some free time on my hands now. Hope you don't mind if I add some of my old stuff, I'll add some other, non-work related, photo's later, have to dig them out of the archives.

Where in the heck have you been Otis?
"Otis" :D :D Forgot that you kind of got hooked on that name. lol
Been all over the place, Eastern and Western Europe mostly and some assignment work here in the states. Back in the ville taking care of some critically ill family members, got one out of a nursing home and am now taking care of all of them full time, by myself. Hate the fact that other family members feel that they do not have enough time and their personal schedules are to busy, yet I moved back to the states just to take care of them. Living and working in some of the FSU countries, of Eastern Europe, has really opened my eyes to what the definition and meaning of family truly is, loving each other also means sacrifice for those who have sacrificed for you...
Of course I digress, anyway: Great to see you again and thanks for that chuckle. :)
Thought that some of you might get a little chuckle from these. We all know about the camera loyalty wars and the battles between Nikon and Cannon users. Truth of the matter, the true difference happens behind the camera and the applied knowledge to the equipment. This being said, we still love to have a bit of fun with it and I cannot wait to get into it with some of my professional Canon bud's. Some of my, personal, favorites are: Written on the cover of the Nikon Manual is "For IQ's 140 and above"; on the Canon Manual "suitable for children". LOL Nikon users download to Mac and display on wide gamut monitors; Canon download to Etch-U- Sketch. As I said, these are all just jokes and trust me, I get my fair share dumped back on me too. Anyway, the reason that I share this with you is support and setup the explanation of the storyline photo's and how we came to shooting this little "Battle Royal".
Even though we joke and tease each other about the brands, we know that the camera deliver so close to the same that any comparison is moot. The bodies of today are really geared more towards the recreational shooters and are loaded down with a lot of automated bells and whistles, this is where the cameras begin to separate in comparisons--- to each his own choice and desire in equipment, as they all have the potential to deliver GREAT images. Back to the storyline: I was talking with several of my Canon pals and we were discussing how violent some take the debate of "Which camera brand is best. We jokingly decided that we should digress into one of those comparison reviews but then decided that we would do it for fun. The story is that we decided to all get together on this little island, off of the coast of Florida, reason is due to the fact that some of us have shot and shoot commercial shoots there , the place is amazing!!! Secret place though, so... :)
I always like to get myself to the shorter side of the slide and, as it turned out, I set myself to be the only Nikon user shooting against 4 professional Canon users --- In my heart and mind, I still knew that I had them outnumbered, so... (just kidding around) LOL Due to the fact that it was more of a fun outing and not really a battle, all though we did test out some of the newer equipment for technical shooting performances, I decided to have some fun at their expense. As you will see, I decided to set it all to cinema format and devised my own storyline, with some artistic freedom in PS (Some people are in the shot that were not there or on the island, you may figure the images out). Hope you enjoy. :)
To set the stage: Somewhere off the coast of Florida, a tranquil island grows from the depths of turquoise waters. Local water fowl skirt the shorelines, as they feed in the outgoing tide.

Hey!!! Been commuting for a good bit, finally managed to get my head above dirt level. Great seeing you are still around! :)
snagaluffaguss, love that last waterfall pic, well done! :)
Sorry to see you're going through some tough times, Snag. Hang in there buddy.
Not sure how I missed this thread. I thought I might contribute.

haha, it was fun while it lasted. I've been back in "Waterworld" for the past few weeks.
My boss asked, like he normally does,"Where you gonna go fish this week?"
"I havent decided if its gonna be the front yard or the back yard yet," was my casual reply. Maybe the 4wt versus some tailing mosquito larvae.

St John. Its a hard place to leave.
I don't necessarily want to condone or encourage all of us to post up our boring summer vacation reports, but I've learned some shit on this one, and I'm subjecting you to it, photographically, mostly. I'm on my last night of a week long trip to the obx with some of my greatest friends in the world. Most of us have very little ones now, and it's been harder to get together like we used to. For a few years we rented a summer camp and had a huge party, but that's become unaffordable and impractical. Also, throwing a 3 day party for 100 people is real work and gets in the way of spending time with the handful of friends I consider family. Anyway....I didn't fish a lick, and this is the first time since I've had kids that I was completely ok with that. PT was very generous and lent me a kayak, but it never left the roof rack. I played in the sand. I took naps. I played in the ocean. I got blackout drunk. I had a 2 1/2 day hangover. I hit one of my best friends in the head with a yeti. Like I said, I've learned things, and that's always good. Cheers.

Now will you please, please go fishing. Please.
Friends/kids beach trips (or any trips for that matter) are severely underrated. Nothing like waking up after blacking out to a room full of innocent kids.

Hung out with my Dad and my Uncle today. Dad in rehab, Uncle in 95F heat on the driving range and putting green. Heat takes it out of an 83 yr old for real. All he wanted to do was hang out with his pup under the A/C when we got back to the house.
Another weekend of fishing sacrificed for the greater good . . .
My brother, on the other hand, earned his keep for real by detailing the T-bird and the Falcon.

Saturday, hell, I don't even remember what the weather was like Saturday, I just know I found myself working for 5 hrs on what should have taken about 30 minutes.
They used to make houses stout. Even with a tile bit and carbide hole saw, this took far too long.

I also neglected to remember that the 2" mortar bed behind tile can sometimes run much thicker, which resulted in a change in anchoring plans. From toggles to epoxy anchors.
But, I got grab bars up in my uncle's shower:

Loginwhich is 1963-ish 35-ton hand chain CRANE. Every movement requires you to pull a chain. The hoist is approximately 700:1 on the "high speed chain" which means to move a load 1' you have to move 700' of hand chain. I don't want to think about the non-high speed hand chain. I pulled on that stupid thing for almost an hour today without a load on it. My arms still want to fall off.
There is a new hoist going on the crane, which will then be motorized itself:

We did get a little 15-ton mobile crane to set scissor lifts and a bunch of other goodies up on the work floor today:

Agree on the paper mill but another is a menhaden processing plant in the 1970s- 90's. They have finally cleaned their act up some. The whole area around the town of Reedville, VA stunk.

Have you placed anything there to attract the pileated to the stump? Or does it just like the stump?
Didn't place nothing there. He was just going to town when I walked outside the other day to do some yard work.
This made my week:

Property next to our shop is grading and hit rock.
They've been drilling for 2 weeks in preparation for this.
I love watching things blow up!
Resurrection time for this thread.
I moved a bunch of my photos to password protected albums on my website. Not gonna take the time to go fix it.
Here's the latest non-fishing, non-photographic accomplishment:

I have questions.
I went to a sporting clay tournament (really a charity deal) and there were some guys who were really into it. They were changing chokes for different shots.
Is that allowed in tournament shooting?
My skeet choke Miroku couldn't keep up!
Where did you get to shoot? *Those* guys (and I'm sometimes one of them) can take the game far too seriously.
Changing chokes is allowed in tournaments until you step into the shooter's box and fire your first round.
After that, you've made your decision and have to live with it.
Skeet chokes usually work for a lot of the softer charity tournaments, but I advise Improved Cylinder or Light Mod. Those cover all but the longest targets. If you have fixed choke barrels, just enjoy the time with friends.

I went to a skeet shoot ~ 25 years ago; it was a hoot! I used the Ruger Red Label 20 fixed IC and M my late father bought for me. It was my dove gun, and I was no better with the skeet than I was with the doves. I still have the Red Label, but I doubt my skill has improved. I couldn't hit a bull in the ass. I don't recall how many clay birds I hit, but I do remember that shots were limited, unlike the dove field, where you could return to the vehicle for more ammo.
All my O/U's are fixed choke barrels so I don't have to worry about it. I was just amused at all the choke changing. That tournament was at Shane's north of GSO.

Yep, you get two shots per pair of targets.
Unless you are shooting a flurry, which is the most fun you can have with a shotgun!
If you ever want to part with the Red Label, I have a couple of kids on the team who may be interested!

"All My O/U's" - I like the sound of that.
Both of mine take choke tubes. I leave Improved Mods in both barrels on my competition gun unless I have to shoot at a target under 10 yds.
Shane's is on my list of places to shoot.
Along with quite a few more in NC.
I've been to Kidd's Place, which is awesome. The Fork in Norwood is high class, and Cleghorn near Rutherfordton is also a sweet place.

Primland is great but too expensive so I have been going here:

Yes, Primland is nice. I made a trip up there earlier this year on a vendor's dime.
Hunting Creek's prices are awesome. I'll have to put that one on my list.
I could foresee a BRFFF Feathers & Fins get together sometime . . . shoot some clays/bird; tie some flies; catch some fish . . .

I've got an old Remington 58 auto w/skeet choke. I was pretty good back in my youth. I could maybe get back into that. A second pretentious sport. :Dance
That'll work Doug! I got my clocked cleaned by some Nelson County boys last thanksgiving. It was a wobble trap and the winner shot a sawed off Remington pump (870?). Matte black with strap / sling. :Dance
I can't make anything happen prior to October, but this could be a lot of fun.
