Spent a couple of days on the water with some buddies of mine. Weather was great and so was the fishing. Saturday was good. Sunday we hit some new to us water and it provided mediocre results. But good times were had.

Captain Obvious was here.

Saw this scarlet tanger from a distance. I noticed it was acting strange looke to be breathing real heavy.  I really knew saomething was wrong when it didn't fly when I walked up to get a better picture.

I watched him slow his breathing and this took one last deep breath and fell out of the tree and into the creek. I scooped him out and he was stone dead.

Briefly hit another stream on the way back and caught a few of these.

Haha, Jason, you swine! I am headed out that way for 4 days of bliss (well at least I hope it will be). I took the skunking on the nose Saturday and yesterday.
Good man, those peckerhead birds make some irritaing sounds. Like the nasty bastards on the piers at the outerbanks, sounds like a dodgy car alarm gone wild.
Curry deer should be good.  /'/

Nicely done. Bummed about the bird. I only get to those once every 3-5 years it seems.

Yeah the bird dying was pretty sad.. Me and birds are like Doug and plants. So I generally love the sounds of birds. Especially waking up to the sound of drumming grouse yesterday morning.

I needed a bird guy with me Saturday. My Warbler ID is seriously lacking.

Scarlets are easily top 5 birds for me

That would be a weird, sad experience with the tanager. Still pretty awesome that you saw one and able to snap the picture.

Looks like a good weekend to me  'c;

Hell yes.

The Baby Stinkhorn I reckon...

MBB

Nice report.  Looks like you got into several quality fish.

BTW I saw a tanager on a blue line about 4 years ago.   Same behavior, fast breathing and just sitting on the ground.  Allowed us to approach very closely but then it flew off.  Here's a pic...

I did some research, but couldn't turn up anything. I did find that they eat wasps, they catch them and knock the stingers off and eat them. Maybe he didn't get the stinger out of one.

Aka

Right on, good looking browns. 'c;
