Wife and I are heading out to escape the heat and humidity of E. Tn. For a week or so.
Staying at a lodge in Montana for a few days to do some floaty boaty trips.
Then heading down to West Yellowstone for five days.
I know better than to try and pet the fuzzy cows but any other advice from the brain trust on dos and donts

I would make an effort to lodge, camp, or be in this general area to watch the sunrise. I camped near hear once in the Fall off an old NF road.  A million dollar view of the Grand Teton can be had here, and the sunrise experienced was second to none. I also remember some monstrous grouse fighting in the middle of aforementioned rd.     https://goo.gl/maps/gkAiegcGevedDmQf7

Call the park ahead of time to inquire about ticket, and traffic. Some parks have interesting entry protocols. This ain't the Smokies, and if nothing has changed you will need to purchase passes, and it may be best to purchase them in advance.

While the falls are interesting, as well as the smelly earth farts, the Alpine plateau topography of this place should be explored.  Not sure if your crew is into hiking, but there are lots of opportunity for wildlife viewing if one plans well.  I did a drive by due to time constraints, and regret not spending more time on the west half of the road loop.

Take a side trip up Rt. 212 into Montana, and drive to Red Lodge. You will be on the southern edge of the Asbaroka highland lakes area. The mountains here are stunning.

Been about 20 years since I have been but in the park hopper and dropper always seemed to work in August. Have a good trip.

I'd check the board outside Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone.  They post river conditions and hatches.

If you buy a Montana License, try Three Dollar Bridge on the Madison below Quake Lake.  (bring 3 one dollar bills).

If you go into the park, leave real early.  Here's the gate at 1038 eastern from the WebCam https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm

Stay on the boardwalks around the thermal pools. They're a little warmer than the hotel hot tub.

There's good advice there, did both of 'em and did well. The Madison kicks ass. I also did well on the Lamar (not right at Buffalo Ford) and the Slough for cutts.
