with a pleasant suprise...

Got to the Ole Mill Pond @ 3 pm.  Air temp 80', water 62', wind blowin' from all points of the compass @ 20-30 mph.  Boat handling and castin' were a bit sporty    :o   Tried several spots and different flys.  Nary a bite.  Fished 'til dark.  Castin' and drinkin' barley pops on the boat still beats work.

As to the pleasant suprise...

It started last week when a fellow called  after talking to a mutual friend from the local Wildlife Club about Shad fishing who told him to give me a call.

He remembered goin' with his Dad decades ago as a kid and wanted to try the Shad again.  Shared what I knew about spinnin' gear and fly fishin' for Shad.  We talked about areas in the Ogeechee that we had both fished.  Talked about the drought and river conditions over the last 8-10 years.  I told him some likely places to troll or anchor up.  I asked him to let me know how he did and I would do the same.

Got home from my pond skunkin' yesterday to find a message to call him.  He had went to a place @ 30 miles or so down from Bulloch County and caught 6 Shad!  5 on spinnin' gear and his first on the fly.  I said "Damn I guess I shoulda went to The River".  Congratulated him on his first fly caught Shad.  Of course I had to ask "What fly did you catch it on"?  He said "You ain't gonna believe this.  I did an online search for Shad flys, and found your No Name Shad Fly and tied some up and that's what I caught it on"...

That is almost, almost as good a feelin' as when I caught my first Shad on that fly.

I've had the itch several times, but haven't made it yet. Maybe this year, but probably not....
