The Great Sleet event of 1987

https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/html/tr/ADA250184/index.html

This one was a trip. 7 inches of sleet in Franklinton NC and even more in Henderson.

Sleet pebbles bounced down steep roofs and piled up on porch roofs causing much damage.  Many boat shelters collapsed.  Driving was impossible. The Massey F 135 tractor could not go through this stuff forward.  Only reverse.  It was a waiting game.  I don't recall it being terribly frigid after the event, but it still took forever for this to melt.

If these types of totals are seen tomorrow, probably looking at 2 weeks before meaningful thawing will take place.

The coldest widespread power outage in Central NC occured 1996. 2.5 inches of snow, sleet, freezing rain.  The day after warmed to 19 degrees followed by two consecutive nights of -2.  Generators weren't as commonplace then.  When the heat kicked on, furnaces ran for nearly 12-24 hours straight. The dry air in the homes caused mouldings and drywall to shrink.  Tons of cosmetic damage to ornate homes due to the extreme dry air. It was so cold in my house the commodes froze over. Some in Lenior reportedly lost power for 2 weeks.

There were some localized long term power outages in Moore County after the big snow of 2000.

The 2002 Ice Storm .75 of ice all over the Triangle.  Folks woke up in their bedrooms with tree limbs thrusted through their ceiling drywall. Some experienced house damage and all their cars were crushed as well. Power was out for 5 days at my place, but some were out for 2 weeks. My son was only 6 months old and my wife went to spend the week with him in Surry County while I juggled a generator between my house and my MIL's place.

Alamance Parks Announces Acquisition of Approximately 800 Acres to Expand Haw River State Trail and Mountains-to-Sea State Trail
Written by chaseparrish on January 22, 2026. Posted in Haw River Trail, Outdoors, Parks & Trails.

Alamance County, NC – Alamance Parks is pleased to announce the acquisition of approximately 800 acres of land in southern Alamance County that will significantly extend the Haw River State Trail and the North Carolina Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

The newly acquired property is a majority of the historic "Alston Quarter" tract, the largest undivided parcel in Alamance County. The land sits south of Saxapahaw at the confluence of the Haw River and Cane Creek.  This acquisition will allow for the construction of 3 miles of additional Haw River State Trail/Mountains-to-Sea Trail and will create new opportunities for outdoor recreation, conservation and environmental stewardship.

As striped bass populations continue to recover in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, an old debate over their effect on salmon is renewed

Justin Macdonald, owner of Northport Fishing Charters and Tours, with two striped bass.

The striped bass population in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence had a good year in 2025.

According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada's scientific assessment, the population of spawning fish grew from an estimated 340,300 in 2024 to 547,300 in 2025.

That's still down, however, from an estimated 585,323 spawners in 2023.

The population estimates have a wide margin of error, as they are based on rates of bycatch in the Northwest Miramichi River commercial gaspereau fishery, acoustic tagging and data on size and abundance from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) trap nets.

You know, I was hoping for an easy last decade or so of my life, but it seems Washington is determined to fuck up everything. What a damn shame. Karma is an interesting thing I guess.  :embarassed:  :o

Quote from: Onslow on January 18, 2026, 06:58:36 AMProbably not. Desperation pricing.

The price drops in house pricing around my area in the last 4-6 weeks is jaw dropping. People are getting hard up for cash.  Two homes near me that are decent shape sold for near 100 per sq. ft.

I might need to start a junk side hustle if peeps are unloading things for cheap.  Still there.

Not 100% sure. Think it was before they had model names.

Was a pre-COVID marketplace find. $1200; no motor.

Bought a used 2-smoke outboard—prob spent more money getting that thing tuned up.

Got me on the cicadas when they came to Philpott. Almost ran outta gas w Dougfish.  Recently helped bag a musky. Paid for itself right there.
