Title: "hartsell nymphing"
Post by: zzdruid on November 28, 2005, 08:31:54 AM

Went out Sun to try out my newly learned nymphing technique on a DH stream near Old 'Fort. No one there but me.

I fished about 200 yds of the stream and picked up 6 from 11:30 to 1:00 , one was a brown about 15 inches others usual Stocker stuff (10-12") . I know that I missed as many as i caught. I used the Smokey Mtn Blackbird and a 'Pitzen' Hugh.  About 2 hrs later I went back down this strech with a WB to see how many I may have mssed and got no strikes at all. ( Sorry didn't take the camera)

i still have trouble seeing the end of the leader so I used a football type float  at the line/leader connection and it make visibility great. I am sold on nymphing and have determined to get a good hold on it. It  seems to be the most consistently productive way to fish, not that I will not do dry/dropper or streamers; they have got to eat and most of it is sub surface.

Question for my betters, are spiders and flymphs presented much the same way as the upstream/dead drift method I used yesterday. I don't seem to hear much about them on BRFF and SFF.

I try to fish these type flies with some movement. Spiders & Flymphs  imitate the transitional stage between nymph and adult.  While a dead drift can be effective, don't forget most times trout will key in on the most vulnerable stage of the insect. The movement of the emerging insect from the stream bottom to the surface will often attract the attention of the fish. Learn the Leisenring lift, it will add another dimension to your subsurface fishing skills.

Here is an interesting site on flymphs. Full of patterns and history on this type fly.

Glad you got out for some fishing. My attempt at a private section of the Watauga was a bust. The farm manager wasn't around to let me in the gate. I ended up fishing the DH section behind the church and caught three in 34 degree weather before I decided to get warm and head home.
