Title: Spinning in Mud
Post by: Phil on August 06, 2018, 19:06:20 PM
The Smallie Show camp/fish at Zaloo's Outpost was a washout. Incessant heavy rains had the New River rocking at 1780 cfs (the mean in this area is 350-400), red-brown and muddy with logs, trees, and assorted trash floating along. As far as I was concerned fly fishing was out, so I broke out the (gasp) spinning rod and plastics with fairly heavy jig hooks and hit the banks. The fish were hugging right there to get out of the flood. Managed some little smallies and redeyes, but at least I didn't get skunked.

Somebody else was around to verify and take my picture (so I could prove I caught fish while the rest of the guys were off trying to float in that mess) --

All fish were within 1 1/2 - 2 feet of the bank.

2 comments. Hmmm. I guess spinning rod fish don't count hereabouts.
Or maybe them Virginny smallies are just so much bigger that my little NC ones aren't worth commenting on. It's OK. Be that way. Henheheh.  n!n

Guilty of dabbling in the gear.

Sometimes fly fishing just doesn't make sense. Good job getting some.

Phil, I just don't have fishing on the brain at the moment.  I'm having fantasies about backpacking Snow Mesa in Colorado.

The sad fact of our current forum situation. If you get five responses these days, you must have posted an epic report.  n!n :;! p;-
