I decided to take a break from targeting big fish today, and took a ride to A close by wild stream..this creek has a large population of nice little rainbows, but when I fish it I'm always hoping to see some of the more elusive browns, and today was no different..I was hoping that the gray, cold weather would bring them out as it often seems to do..
The creek, like most in the area had gotten a good cleaning last week when we received around 8.5" to 9.5" of rain in 36 hrs, and with the replenished flows it was looking the best I've seen it in some time..

The browns did make an appearance and they were handsome, and well fed. as were the rainbows. And all fish were extremely spunky in the cold temps..

yeah man,
I'm off the eastern escarpment and there are a ton of big stones in the creeks around here..
snag told me that they may be "roach stones"..I don't know what they are but the fish love em'..any big dark stone nymph usually works well..

My son: My dad has two fish on his car and they're both trout!

I have tried tellicos in the area, but not on this particular creek..may have to give it a try..

Not bad for a winter day on a small creek. Those girdle bugs are killers in all kinds of colors 8) We have several stonefly genera that are just about always present in most of our mountain freestone streams. The giant black stone and golden stones are the two largest that I know of. A black girdle bug is a great imitation for the giant black, and a Blackburn Tellico is a good one for the Golden Stones.

There's more B.S. in fly fishing than there is in a Kansas feedlot.
