Coal town Tailwater

Visited my in-laws in far southwest VA over the easter weekend.  I slipped out for a couple of hours of fishing on a tailwater I had not fished before.

Drove up and down the coal roads

Arrived at this

found fish feeding on Midges.  Went thru most of these.

Ended up with an even dozen all about 8".

Made it back in time to color eggs.  Everyone was happy.

Where you were fishing wasn't too far from my house. But you know I bet it has been 5yrs or so since I was there. It is a good river and has some nice fish in it. Just it is hard to tell when you can wade and they are really spooky at times. Or the big ones are anyway. Nice to see it is fishing good. Also it lacks some management that is could use too enforce the Spec. Regs that are on it. I have see too many worm cups down there. Not a bad idea, I may need to try it again sometime.

This is only the second time I have fished this river.  The first about 9 years ago.  It is about 45 minutes from my in-laws.

I have heard there are some large fish in the river, but I was having too much fun playing with the feding fish.

You are right about the enforcement.  I saw a few hardware guys right before the sp. reg. section they did not seem to be catching any, but I saw 3 guys walk right by the sign carrying their bait.  They reacted well when I pointed out the sign.  They were not catching fish and left shortly after.

Woolly,  I really like those lightweight foam boxes.

Now all I have to do is learn how to catch larger fish on the midges.

I got the flys, but I am still learning how to fish the smaller stuff.  Just when I think I have it figured out I get humbled big time.
