Did a float w/ a buddy today. He fished spin (he's a muskie freak), and I fished fly.
We raised 14 fish, a couple of them two or three times. I had two eats, and one "lipping" the fly.
I boated a 34 incher.

So out of the fourteen, what do you think the "fly to spin" ratio was?

troutphisher

That is an absolutely awesome fish, 34" of pure fighting machine.

Excellent!

Beetle

That is great stuff Tx.

It is quite unreal that you got one on the fly-  you should pick up some lottery tickets today!

I'm assuming that you went 1 for 14 and your buddy didn't raise one.

Txfly

That was fourteen seperate fish.
I can think of at least four that were initially raised by one of us and then the other raised the fish again, usually sight cast to.

I raised ten on fly to his four on lure!

When we got back to his house he told his wife how I kicked his ass "ON A FLY ROD"...but I remained humble about it and told him that it was a fluke and would come around two-fold.

Yeah, I like fish that eat other fish ;D

I love it when the good guys win.   0--0

I plan to start trying to get myself a muskie soon.  Emphasis on trying.  What weight rod are you using?  I have an 8.  I assume I'm one size too small.

I have read about a "snake fly" that is supposed to be killer on the muskie.  I don't have any, but I have found recipes with internet searches before.

Congrats!

Txfly

I'm using ten weights.
TFO Mini Magnum is my fave, it is an S glass composite 8 footer.
As for the snake fly....I don't think there is anything in the world that is "killer" for muskie.
They won't even touch live bait if they're not in the mood!

Gotta love catching them prehistoric looking things as long as you leg on a fly. Oh yea, you know we all think you suck >:D ;)

ex - I'm not going to live with you through one more fishing season!
me -There's a season?

Pastor explains icons to my son: you know like the fish symbol on the back of cars.
My son: My dad has two fish on his car and they're both trout!

Txfly

Beetle, that's two...in ten days.

Funny thing is:
On the one hand I can say "been there, done that"...
On the other hand, after my muskie fishing hangover wore off, I'm ready to go back.
I will get one over forty by the end of the year!
I am slowly dialin' and reelin' in on these bastards, everyday brings more knowledge.

My flies are getting tweeked, leaders redesigned...game changing.
That little TFO is the shit for blind casting all day... and it's only a $200 rod, I just bought a second one!
I think I'm hooked.
Fuckin' water wolves!

App Trout Bum

Ahhh, love Muskie. We fished for them a lot in Colorado and had great luck with a fly. I've done it around here with mixed results, but just seeing them is awesome. Great pics!!!

Beetle

shhh......It's muskie time again...... :-X

I have a trip planned two weeks from now.   :-X

kylemc

Txfly is still chasing them relentlessly.

Peddler

Talk about suckish! You lit that damned fire and have me reaching for my spool of American Wire to twist up a tippet!
Right now... Lake Saint Clair... wading the sand flats for pike and muskie! Who's driving?  ;hb

Here are a couple of toothy guys that Big Fish Grant and his buddy caught last week.  Check out the pink tube fly in the first one.....11 inches long.
