Fishery Strives to Keep Its Trophies Thriving
Anglers at the home of some of the largest rainbow trout in the world can cash in their trophy catches for as much as $2,000 per fish.

A precipitous decline of forage fish in Lake Pend Oreille in northern Idaho compelled fishery managers to place a bounty on the rainbow trout. The incentive program is intended to reduce Pend Oreille's rainbow and lake trout populations by 50 percent while boosting the numbers of kokanee salmon, the landlocked sockeye salmon that are the rainbow's preferred food.
