Trump administration opens more land for coal mining, offers $625M to boost coal-fired power plants

The Trump administration said Monday it will open 13 million acres of federal lands for coal mining and provide $625 million to recommission or modernize coal-fired power plants as President Donald Trump continues his efforts to reverse the year-long decline in the U.S. coal industry.

The Trump administration has announced plans to open 13 million acres of federal land for coal mining and funnel $625 million into recommissioning coal-fired power plants2. Framed as a push for "energy dominance," this initiative rolls back environmental protections, slashes royalty rates for coal leases, and delays compliance with coal ash regulations—despite coal's steep decline in economic viability and its well-documented health toll3.

Meanwhile, China is racing in the opposite direction. In the first half of 2025 alone, China's wind and solar generation rose 27% year-over-year, enough to cut fossil fuel use by 2%. Clean energy now meets over 84% of China's electricity demand growth, backed by $625 billion in renewable investment in 2024—more than 30% of the global total. China isn't just greening its grid; it's reshaping global energy economics.

So what's the cost of clinging to coal?

Health Hazards: Coal mining and combustion release particulate matter, heavy metals, and toxic ash linked to respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, and long-term chronic conditions7. Communities near mines and plants—often low-income and marginalized—bear the brunt.

Environmental Damage: Strip mining scars landscapes, contaminates waterways, and disrupts ecosystems. Coal ash storage risks groundwater pollution and catastrophic impoundment failures.

Economic Drag: Despite subsidies, coal remains one of the most expensive and polluting energy sources. Propping up aging plants delays the inevitable transition and saddles ratepayers with higher costs.

The irony? While Trump touts coal as essential to powering AI and industrial growth, China is proving that renewables can do it cleaner, faster, and cheaper. The future isn't in digging deeper—it's in building smarter.

Let's stop romanticizing the past and start investing in the energy systems that will actually carry us forward.

Will mining destroy America's most-visited wilderness?
The Trump administration is moving rapidly to approve a mine next to the Boundary Waters that many fear will pollute the pristine wilderness area.

ELY, Minn. — Becky Rom has been fighting to protect the famed Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness since she was in middle school.

As the granddaughter of a miner and the daughter of a pioneer in outdoor recreation, the 76-year-old national chair of the advocacy group Save the Boundary Waters has provided a link to a bygone era when the region was a true frontier. As a child, her family even had a pet wolf named Wisini, after one of the Boundary Waters' iconic lakes.

Now Rom is preparing to let younger activists take over — at a time when the Trump administration is poised to make massive shifts to how public lands are managed. The outcome has implications for the future of mining in long-protected areas across the United States, from Arizona to Alaska.

"What we see now is an administration that is interested in mining everywhere no matter the environmental consequences," said Justin Pidot, a law professor at the University of Arizona. "They're moving at a breakneck pace and once mining actually begins, once you break ground, it becomes harder and harder to pull back."

The boundary waters canoe area is one of those places that has become ingrained in me. The thoughts of the damage to come breaks my heart. One of the only place where you can drink water right out of the lakes. Guess that will be a thing of the past.

The Energy Department on Wednesday canceled $7.56 billion in funding for 223 projects aimed at research and deployment of clean energy and other climate-friendly technology mainly in Democrat-led states.
The cuts are the latest in President Donald Trump's efforts to undercut renewable energy and other efforts to reduce the emissions driving climate change. The administration has already sought to claw back funding allotted under President Joe Biden's signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act. That includes $20 billion from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which supported investments in green technology like heat pumps and electric vehicles, and $7 billion in the Solar for All program to help low- and middle-income families install rooftop solar.
The latest cuts include a $1.2 billion award for ARCHES H2, a public-private partnership aimed at kick-starting the hydrogen industry in California, according to a list of affected projects reviewed by The Washington Post. Another project would have spent more than $400 million in federal money to add 28 gigawatts of new energy generation to the power grid in Minnesota, mostly from wind and solar.

So this is what they mean by Making America Great Again?
I miss the "discussions" on this and some other forums. I would like to hear what the trump supporters have to say about what's going on.

While your points may be on point in many ways, they refer to a historical perspective that does not address the shit storm we have been in since the Trumpster (think dumpster) was elected. No matter how wrong the Biden administration might have been, to my knowledge they abided by rule of law and the constitution. We have a serious situation now that needs to be addressed now. I'm ok with some of the points raised by the Trumpster administration- they are valid, but how anyone can use this as justification to simply ignore the law is beyond me.

I agree with trouts-us, I would be very interested in what a maggot type would say about what has been going on. Is "the end justifies the means" really the new "justice "?  And as bad as the Trumpster is, the people he has appointed may be worse, perhaps worse than the Republicans who continue to ignore their sworn responsibilities to support the Constitution and our country as a whole, but it's a close call. I have always supported the concept of different political beliefs- that always seemed the epitome of freedom, but what we have now is, bend your knee to the king or you are evil.  Where's the freedom in that?

There is no allowed difference of opinion, just obey or be shit upon.  Is that really the America we want?  I just don't get it. You disagree with me - ok - that's freedom.  I disagree with you - that's un-American and I'm a piece of shit. Is that the freedom the maggots voted for?

So if you voted for Trump, do you really feel good about what is happening, or perhaps more importantly, how it is happening?  Please share your thoughts.  Maybe I'm missing something.

The Trump Administration Just Greenlit the Ambler Road Project, Overturning Years of Input from Outdoorsmen

In a press conference held in the Oval Office Monday afternoon, President Trump and Interior secretary Doug Burgum announced the administration's latest effort to advance the Ambler Road, a proposed 211-mile private industrial corridor in Interior Alaska.

The White House issued a 27-page Statement of Reasons on Trump's decision to approve an appeal from the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, or AIDEA, an Alaskan governmental agency that's mandated to pursue economic development in the state.

Trump exercised an obscure provision of ANILCA, or the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, to approve the appeal and pave the way for the Ambler Project. The proposed road is a 211-mile road that would cut through the wilderness south of the Brooks Range and connect the Dalton Highway to mining deposits. At least four separate mines have been suggested, but there is currently no cap on how much development could happen along Ambler.
