Volunteers, researchers work to restore Pine Knob Trail

South Yellow Mountain Preserve, located between the town of Spruce Pine and Roan Mountain, became the largest private land donation in North Carolina history in 2023.

Volunteers are upgrading its main hiking trail, the nearly four-mile-long Pine Knob Trail. Some sights along Pine Knob include a large waterfall and views of the Black and Roan Mountains.

Park Greer with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy leads a group of volunteers.

"It's primarily a research preserve, while connecting people to nature and preserving clean air, clean water, and wildlife pathways as well," Greer explained.
