RIP Jim Lovell

#25 — 49, gas $2.95

The RAV4 I got about 36 mpg hauling the raft.

The stars aligned and I rounded up Rhody and Patrick for a float. Looking for some new water and good launch and takeout spots for the Hooligan we picked part of the South Fork New River, with the intent to float from New River Outfitters on down to King's Creek Access. That was the plan, but I fired off some text to Riverbum, Greyson, and ODG3 for some intel. ODG3 convinced me to check out the planned takeout and consider putting in higher up at the New River State Park and take out 1.5 miles before King's Creek.

I got up early and check the "ramp" at King's Creek, it wasn't trailer friendly and would require dragging the raft on crushed gravel. Next I checked out the alternate takeout, which turned out to be not too bad. So, I called an audible and we met up at the park. Trip measured out at 6.5 miles.

We ran the shuttle and were on the water by 10:45, a little later than planned.

Then the action started, we all caught fish, drank beer and didn't take many pictures. The mostly pastoral float was punctuated with a couple of constrictive rapids where we got hung up, but it wasn't bad at all with the gauge at Jefferson reading just below 300 cfs.

Maybe it was the full moon, or the cloudy skies, but whatever it was it turned the top water bite on.

I did some raft maintenance, taking out the floor and rinsing / scrubbing the accumulated mud and debris out.

Emptied out the cooler and couldn't resist and ice cold Allagash Surf House despite it being only 10:15.

Now that the raft is reassembled and parked in the garage. I'm having another beer.  :cheers

We all agreed that this was a great section to fish and will be back as long as the water doesn't get too low...
