Mudwall Gatewood 3.0

Recently trimmed/cut veg from my stream bank.  Left what I think is a beautiful 'shrub', Atlantic Ninebark.

If my ID is correct, or even wrong, this plant flipped my cookie!

Tell me something about it.

Sorry Doug.  I was eating an Amish pastry from Highland County when sending the original message.

Physocarpus opulifolius.
Big, upright to sprawling.
Multistem with exfoliating bark.
White/pale pink spring
flower clusters followed
by small red fruit.
Commonly seen along waterways.
Rose family. Zones 2-8.
Lots of improved cultivars in the trade. Many with compact habit and maroon to yellow foliage.

Glad Dough could help.

Many thanks Dough!

So, my ID was correct.  It is a very attractive plant, beautiful along my short section of Little Back Creek.  Hoping it will spread!

There is a cultivar called Diablo that might suit you well.

Onslow

I saw a tree today on the Little River @ the NC/VA border I've never seen before. It was in full bloom and the flowers looked like persimmon, but the bark looked like black gum. The leaves were larger than either and were cleaner. The shape of the leaves was somewhat the same, but wider.  The leaves were about 3 inches wide, but about 5.5-6 inches long.  As stated earlier, the flowers looked like persimmon but were almost an inch in diameter. The bark wasn't matching. The leaves were smooth and not veiny and thick. I have no idea.  Maybe I'll find time to hit the books tomorrow.

I also noticed an abundance of basswood on this trip.  This is the only place I've ever seen an abundance of basswood trees.
