Sedition and Pockets

It's that time of year when the migratory browns move out of the lake and into the E TN tailwaters just in time for the first stirrings of the Drift Boat hatch.  It's also the time of year when social pressure forces me to begrudgingly acknowledge another personal circuit around the sun.  So, despite my personal distaste for (and limited skill at) techy nymphing tactics, when I found myself with access to a seat on a boat, I figured, "Why not?"

Well, I was immediately reminded why I don't normally do this shit.  We took up the dawn patrol (ugh) to make the most of the expected morning low water.  Unfortunately, the sun never actually broke through, and the order of the morning was thick clouds and fog on the water.  We couldn't lay eyes on the pods, and your girl couldn't overcome 15 years of built in muscle memory.  I got plenty of drops, but couldn't overcome the habits formed by upstream wade fishing and actually come tight.  Ass.  Handed.

So it was a relief to me when TVA turned the water on an hour early and we pulled anchor and streamer fished to ramp.  It was still a grind, but the grind I know.  I even pinned a couple and headed home content.

I also have a love/hate with the nymphing drift boat SOHO game. Them two fish made it worth it though.

It's just more or less backwards from everything else I ever do.  It just feels unnatural
