My old John Thomas special St. Croix 5 wt. 8' rod found its resting place on the bottom of the New.  This somewhat dead tip rod 30 year old rod was perfect or small and mid size streamers. Shorter rods are easier on the arms for those long Summer days.

The Mojo appeared to be a good short rod.  Reviews were good, so I bought the 7 wt.  This particular St. Croix is made in Mexico.  I do wish lighter models were available. I paired it with a 7wt Rio Bass taper, and gave it try. The rod is light and easy to swing, but the rod is very stiff and 7 wt doesn't load well. The leader will need to be shortened to 6', and it may need to be up-lined to 8 or even 9 if throwing lighter objects.

I will work out the kinks.

St Croix used to make some good rods. But I guess the focus on "pro bass" has taken it's toll. The legend series was great, but discontinued.

St. Croix has eliminated the standard imperial.  Now one must choose either the Technica or Evos.  Both are $975.

Really? I hadn't looked into them in a while. Didn't even know they came out with a new line up.

You should consider a new "fast" glass rod. Loading is not a problem, and the slower action will not wear you out.

I pretty much use an Epic 8'6" 6wt for bass fishing exclusively.

I can build some decent inexpensive glass rods. just sayin..

I have a St Croix Mojo Bass. Quite stiff. Didnt really like it till I got a heavier line on it. Tosses a full sinking line great.

Onslow --- I got a couple token 6/7/8wt glass rods you can try before you buy ---- Redington Butterstick, Moonlight and Halo. Epic is the caddy of glass.

And I assume you can't test the Epic before you buy. I know you can send it back, but kinda a pain.

Granted, too few shops around anymore and those that are, don't seem to have a great inventory to try out. Such is life. Tough to be a small business now and always.

When fishing, a person ought to carry a flask of whisky in case of snakebite. Furthermore, he ought to also carry along a small snake.

I wish rod companies would include what line they recommend for each. Proper pairing makes all the difference.

The reason why my line wasn't loading was because St. Croix sent me a 9wt., not a 7 wt. I ordered.  I did not notice until I changing out the line a few weeks back.

The new Echo 84B rods have gotten very good reviews if you want to look at another shorter stick. I have considered selling my 8 weights and trying out the Echo. Need to test one out at the shop next time.
