Woolly Bugger

looks like a pretty nice day to be on the water... :drum
Because I have common sense, ok
and unfortunately, a lot of people don't.

Called on ole fishing bud over the weekend about fishing.  He wanted to float one of my local streams which happens to be a long run of almost 10 miles. Monday morning came and the weather had gone wet and the radar coverage looked ominous.  We opted to float a shorter section on the Yadkin that generally fishes good.

The water was clear in Elkin, but turbid 11 miles down.  The catching was terrible. The Kentucky Spots have been on strike all year for me. Caught 4 smallies but none of any size. The largest one was caught right in the middle of heavy riffle/shoal run in shallow water and caught it ripping a streamer across it.

If the Kerr Scott releases over 400 cfs this time of year,  the water quality will not be satisfactory.

Jeff gave it a try last Friday.  Fish appear to be in spawn mode.  Larger females were largely absent.

My son and I were on the Yadkin Saturday.  Put in early and caught some smaller fish.  The good news is that an abundance of fry was seen in all the right locations.  Maybe one good thing about drought is what appears to be a successful spawn.

2026 fry already?

Yes. So it would seem.

Jeff aka Fishwhisperer reached out late Friday concerning fishing the Y.

We discussed the lower sections near Boone Cave, but he wanted to try a section he hadn't fished yet.

It dropped to 35 this morning.  Frost on the roofs in low areas.

Boats were in the water at 8:30, fishing was terribly slow until noon.  He pulled ahead hammering the water with his 4 baitcasters.

I had only caught one fish before lunch.  I changed up a couple things.

An 18 incher chomped the dungeon but it didn't hold

Lost another about 14.

The bite lasted an hour and things slowed again.  Finally landed a smallie

The losing continued. I lost a 16" spot, had another 16" smallie smack right at the canoe in very shallow water which happened to be matted with hydrilla. Had another smack while preparing to cast as the Kreelex dipped in the water. It was at least 16. Lost a 15-16 spot right at the take out.

The low water conditions have allowed the hydrilla to grow like crazy.  This also made the beds visible.  I've only fished the Y once in March, only once in April, and just a couple miles worth in May.  I rarely see the river clear n May.  It was neat to see the beds in the shallow push water.

Common carp are now in the Y above the water intake dam near Enon.  I saw some beasts today.  35"

Jeff landed two citation spots, one was 1 6.5"  That's a beast of a Kentucky Spot  He also landed a 19" smallie.  No guessing.  It was measured.
