The cousins on my Mom's side of the family have always been close. The six of us grew up together. We played, hunted, fished, got in trouble, celebrated, laughed and cried together.
When my youngest cousin's youngest daughter got engaged and announced a wedding in Montana, we all decided to go. Short and long term health issues kept two at home as we got closer.
I talked Anne into driving. We took the truck, lots of gear, wedding/party duds and a cooler for tailgate meals and headed out on May 1.
VA, WV, OH, IN, IL, IA, SD, WY, MT, ID, UT, CO, KS, MO, KY. Some states were hit twice.
14 days, 5820 miles.

Wedding was fun. Except for the fact that it proved to be a super spreader event.
We both got the Vid.
Meh. Slowed us down, didn't stop us. Glad we were vaxed and boosted.

Top three? Yellowstone, Goblin, Badlands.
Rushmore, small. Crazy Horse, yuge.

Yellowstone River was blown out with snow melt.
Tried a lake in 25-30 mph winds. Whitecaps slapped me in my back. No hookups.
Caught big brookies in a mountain pond with my brother.
Had to drive 2200 miles to fish with him?! And catch brookies?!

Tacoma was the bomb. No saddle sores. No back issues. Headwinds going out killed the gas mileage, though.
This was somewhat of a "sampler" tour. Never stayed more than one night anywhere except for the wedding stop.
We'll go back and take our time the next trip.

Love it.  Wall Drug is so cheesey, lol.

Next time you go out that way, cut up northward through central Kansas into Nebraska to check out Scotts Bluff. As recently as 1994, there were towns in rural Kansas that were gravel/dirt at the main intersections. Scotts Bluff is a great place to picnic as the sun sets.  An early morning drive along the North Platte is cool as well.

I'm going to do the Oregon trail by car someday.

Dodge City is a great place to learn about all the treachery....
