Up early and on the road.
I had been watching the gauges forever.
The flows were too low or the timing was always off.
After the rain dump on Tuesday things started to look good for the end of the week.
Falling water.
The gauge was still a bit stout, but hey....

30 degrees to start, a bit windy.
The first fleece pant day of this winter.
I bet on no emerging bugs.
Took the euro rod. Put the dry fly reel in the pack just in case.
I hiked down to my starting point and immediately caught a small rainbow.
Missed a couple then I started to reach across a fast run to soft water behind a large rock.
Finally got a good drift around the rock and the line came tight.
Then snapped...
A few seconds later a large otter popped up behind the rock staring right at me.
That son of a gun knew exactly where I was, and he was wearing one of my flies.
You can't land an otter on 7x. Now I know.

Retied and carried on.

Rinse and repeat rainbows. 12-15 7-10" bows to hand.
Quite a few of the rambunctious lot were lost.

Midway through the wading hell section.
Blocky irregular rocks. All ultra slippery.
Gobs of wood. Big and little.
Rhodos block escape on one side, a steep slope on the other.
A wee stout flow.
I slept well that night.

Not many fish pics. I didn't want to take me fingerless wool gloves off.
Got a wet sock 16" stocker that found its way upstream and only one brown.
The bow:brown ratio has gone from 5:1 to 15:1 over the last 10 years.

No bugs were seen. Home before dark.
:cheers

Anything but the Smith is good.  Bummer on the cockroach infestation, but regarding your ratio, keep in mind what season the browns are currently in.

There needs to be a lobbying effort to cease all stocking on NFs and State parks.  There are policies against feeding wildlife, and stocking trout is feeding wildlife...otters.
