I'm getting ready for a solo camp/fish in VA, Grindstone (where I usually camp) is mostly closed for extensive water repairs. Wondering about using Beartree as a base camp. Anyone have info -- better looking loops or sites to recommend? Is the campground worth a shit in general? Jist askin....

Dougfish

I'm surprised TM hasn't responded.

We were in Chipmunk Loop end of April. Plumbing was OK. They have closed bathhouses now. Portajohns and water tanks. Sites from 26-34? were really good.
Loop B wasn't open then. Open now with full facilities. Looks similar to Chipmunk. No reservations. First come, first served. Take cash. Only way to pay.
That's all I got, Phil. Those NF campgrounds are similar vintage and all need a full renovation.

Hey, just wondering -- tried to call the number on the website, but no go. They really take cash at the first-come sites? I haven't seen that in any NF or NP campgrounds.

Self check in. Cruise thru, select site. Envelope at gate. Fill out info, insert cash, drop into secure box.
No NF staff on site, just campsite hosts.

Phil- I am scheduled to be there on the 11th for three or four nights with my WV friend Phil and his wife-(you have met). I was under the impression he had made reservations? I have camped there with him for the last four years and it has been ok. Sounds like Doug has the latest...I hope we have a campsite. Bring you guitar!

Phil

Fred, that might be in the loop where they do take reservations. I will check the dates and see if I can make it those dates. It would be fun to hook up with ya'll.

Dougfish

They are taking reservations for most of the Chipmunk loop.
But toilets and showers are closed.
I would move to the other loop. But that's just me. Get there early on Friday and you should be able to snag a good site.

Is there a decent trout stream within walking distance of the camp sites?

It's a campground, not the Taj Mahal

short drive to Creek Junction (whitetop laurel / cove creek) where you can park on the creek...

The headwaters of Straight Branch run right by the campground. Piss trickle.
At 58, left to Creek Junction, right to Straight Branch trailhead.

I have caught some nice Weakfish (grey trout), along with stripers just a short stroll up the beach from the infamous failed trumpsky hotel/casino with the same name. Wonder if he mentions that in the "art of the deal"?
And believe it or not, there are some pretty good trout streams around the country with adjacent camping facilities.
