Quote from: troutboy_II on April 19, 2024, 12:36:24 PMBut the new venue is just that - wedding parties, sometimes office get togethers, etc.  Not a real music venue on the circuit like before. That's fine and all, but I would rather stand for a Handelbar concert than attend a local DNC fundraiser (wife said I had to go since we were sponsors  :o- what the hell!  How did that happen :-\ ?  But I digress...

You're still fortunate to have the Flat Iron close by.

Well, confused the issue, didn't I?  I was referring to the Handlebar.
When fishing, a person ought to carry a flask of whisky in case of snakebite. Furthermore, he ought to also carry along a small snake.

Back at the Flat Iron for Abigail's monthly singer/songwriter series with Joy Clark from New Orleans. She was scheduled to tour Asheville and end up in Greensboro, with all of those events in WNC cancelled she still flew up for Abigai's concert.

Give her a listen!

I was going to mention that the bluegrass rendition of Sympathy For The Devil was timely as I had just finished listening to the final episode of Andrew Hickey's 500 Songs podcast on that song, ending with the disastrous 1969 Altamont Speedway Free Festival which concluded the Rolling Stones US tour.

Song 176, "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones, part 4: "Who Breaks a Butterfly?""

My birthday weekend was was filled with some fantastic music starting off Friday evening with a house concert / pot luck event with NC native Laurelyn Dossett.

Saturday, we went to UNCG School of Music's 17th annual performance of Collage at the UNCG Auditorium. This event features hundreds of Students performing a variety of classical and contemporary scores.

We were fortunate to be invited to a house concert featuring Hank, Pattie and the Current. They were a great progressive bluegrass band based in Raleigh. Led by banjo player Hank Smith and fiddle player/vocalist Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw, the group blends traditional bluegrass with influences from classical, Motown, jazz, and pop to create a unique and soulful sound.

The Doodad Farm hosted a fundraiser for The Arc of Greensboro. Scores of musicians donated their time and talents for a flashback show, "Songs from Laural Canyon" The show started at three in the afternoon and continued past sunset, unfortunately we had to leave at six for prior engagements.

Check out the Doodad on Facebook for upcoming events this summer, it's always a good time.

Here is a sample of the performances.

The NC Folk Fest will be back again this year SEPTEMBER 12-14, 2025 in Greensboro. One of the headliners is Steep Canyon Rangers, member Graham Sharp preformed last night at the Flat Iron as a mentor in their Emerging Artist Series featuring Abagail Dowd. This concert just popped up on my feed at the last miniute and I was thrilled that we got tickets. There was a pretty large crowd in the 99 capicity Flat Iron. They weren't there to hear Abigail, and chattered during here set, but gave full attention to Graham and his band comprised of some talented muscians including Darren Nicholson on the mandolin, and SCR bass player Barrett Smith. Didn't catch the name of the fiddle or guitar players.
