Canadian mining company sues US over Idaho water pollution

>>>BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A Canadian company seeking U.S. approval for three open-pit gold mines in central Idaho is suing the U.S. government, contending U.S. officials are allowing water pollution at the already heavily mined site in violation of environmental laws.

British Columbia-based Midas Gold filed the lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court against the U.S. Forest Service under the Clean Water Act's citizen enforcement provision. The area contains important salmon habitat that the company says it will restore if allowed to mine.

Midas Gold, which has yet to do any mining in the area but has claims, is itself being sued by the Nez Perce Tribe over the same pollution caused by past mining companies.

Environmental groups push for removing Colorado River dam

>>>Environmental groups that have long pushed to bring down a huge Colorado River dam along the Arizona-Utah border are suing the federal government.

They say in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Arizona that the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation ignored climate science when approving a 20-year operating plan for Glen Canyon Dam. The dam holds back Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the country.

Mexican farmers occupy dam to stop water payments to the United States

>>>MEXICO CITY — For 75 years, through tensions and disputes over immigration, narcotrafficking and trade, Mexico and the United States have sent each other billions of gallons of water annually to irrigate farms along the border under a treaty signed during World War II.

But today, the 1944 agreement is facing increasingly violent opposition in drought-parched Chihuahua state, where protesters have seized control of a major dam to dramatize the plight of farmers whose cotton, tomato and pecan crops, they say, depend on the water that's being sent north.

Unrest has simmered for months over U.S. demands that Mexico pay off a shortfall of more than 100 billion gallons by Oct. 24 to meet its five-year water delivery quota. Local farmers say the extra payments are emptying dams that store water they need.

Feds issue red flag warning on lakes Powell and Mead

>>>Risk of severe water shortages in the seven-state Colorado River Basin have risen dramatically since April with new forecasts indicating that lakes Powell and Mead could hit crisis levels much sooner than previously expected.

U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Brenda Burman said the change in the forecast is noteworthy.

"We're dealing with more uncertainty than we thought," she said during a virtual press conference Tuesday.

How The East Troublesome Fire Could Impact Water On The Front Range

>>>Due to the growth of the East Troublesome Fire, the Colorado-Big Thompson project has suspended operations of the Adams Tunnel, as well as a pump that pulls water from Lake Granby. The Colorado-Big Thompson (C-BT) project provides water from the Western Slope to the Front Range, and includes local reservoirs like Horsetooth and Carter Lake.

What the Biden victory means for our rivers and clean water

American Rivers is ready to work with President Biden, Vice President Harris, and their administration to repair the substantial damage to rivers and clean water.

>>>One of my favorite quotes is from Leonardo da Vinci, "In rivers, the water that you touch is the last of what has passed and the first of that which comes; so with present time." Elections are like rivers, framed by what has happened in the past and full of possibility for the future.  This year's election is no exception.

Now that it appears that Joe Biden is our President-elect, American Rivers is ready to work with President Biden, Vice President Harris, and their administration to repair the substantial damage to rivers and clean water done by the Trump administration over the past four years and, going forward, make real progress in protecting and restoring rivers and conserving clean water.  We've identified five priorities for the Biden-Harris administration and Congress in our 2021 Blueprint for Action:

As Lake Powell Recedes, River Runners Race To Document Long-Hidden Rapids

https://www.kunc.org/2020-11-23/as-lake-powell-recedes-river-runners-race-to-document-long-hidden-rapids

Climate change and overuse are causing one of the Colorado River's biggest reservoirs, Lake Powell, to drop. While water managers worry about scarcity issues, two Utah river rafters are documenting the changes that come as the massive reservoir hits historic low points.

The Rancher Trying to Solve the West's Water Crisis

The power politics of the Colorado River have long pitted families like Paul Bruchez's against big cities. Under pressure from climate change, they might be finding a path out.

>>>Paul Bruchez's family has ranched cattle in Colorado for five generations. And twice in his lifetime, his generation has nearly become the last.

The first time, it was the city of Denver that squeezed them out. By the 1990s, when Bruchez was still in high school, the city's fast-growing suburbs had swept north and totally surrounded their roughly 2,000 acres in Westminster. Bruchez's father had taken dirt roads to get to school, but by the time Bruchez was a teenager development had engulfed the family homestead so completely that at one point the city needed to send a police escort to help move their harvest equipment safely between fields on what were by then city roads. Running a full-scale farm operation in the middle of a city soon became untenable and the family opted to cut a land deal with the city and start fresh on the other side of the Rocky Mountains.

EDITORIAL: Strange Diversions in a Strange Land, Part Two

>>>On June 13, 1962, Congress passed the Public Law 87-483 which was then signed by President John F. Kennedy, allowing for the diversion of water from natural flow of the Colorado River, into the Rio Grande River Basin. One result of that law was a US Bureau of Reclamation project known as the San Juan-Chama Project, a collection of dams, underground tunnels and siphons that drain up to 96,000 acre-feet of water out of the San Juan River basin and deliver it to New Mexico, to be used for municipal water and agricultural irrigation. About 56% of the diverted water eventually makes its way to the City of Albuquerque, with another 24% used by the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, 8% by the Jicarilla Apache Tribe, and 7% by the City of Santa Fe. Various other water agencies consume the remainder.
