The term 'canebreak' always baffled the hell out of me, when reading about those first explorers of the frontier which we now call KY, OH, etc.   Most reported huge "canebreaks".

It is my understanding that most of the native cane has disappeared, compared to what it once was.

Does anyone know where the native cane still grows, particularly the gigantean?

Maybe I've seen it before and had no clue.

Tons of it in my neck of the woods. Not sure of the species. But i never see any higher than 10ft. In the costal plains that shit is everywhere.

Google it, professor.
Arundinaria genus.
As usual, humans fucked up their natural habitat.

There's a big canebreak of hill cane along the North River (TN) at the campground.

Another massive canebreak of giant cane is along the 3rd creek greenway near UT campus.  I'm not sure if its native, some of the older homes in the area appear to have canebreaks as a means of a natural privacy fence, so it could have spread to that area.

Plus this!!   I knew I read "canebreak" in the old stuff.

<Until spelling became standardized in the mid-nineteenth century, the term was alternatively spelled "canebreak.">

Doug, after you kiss my ass, please tell me if I plant some of the giant cane in the wet areas of my land, will I regret it?

Many thanks, your pal,
Hiner

The person owning that property after you will regret it as they watch that stuff take over everything.

This variety of cane has one use, and it's crappy at that.

Stalk softly and carry a green stick.
