What a weird Spring. Weather, work, family, cataract surgeries, our garden being on tour, house projects, etc.
A general conspiracy against fishing, I tell you!
One of the offshoots of all that stuff is that my bote has not gotten in the water!
We were going to do that Sunday. Butttt.....
I did not get the trailer wiring finished on Saturday.  b';

Nevermind, J and I will just scout some unproven water with unproven access.  p;-
A door knocking at stream one was required. Don't worry about that early Sunday morning, locked gate, no trespassing signs, barking dog and such.
I let J go and do the deed. He's cuter and more charming?  :laugh:
Not only did he not get shot, or chased off, but he got us a grand tour of the property and an escort up the mountain in their beater Fourunner.

Dry ridges of Chestnut Oak, Scrub pine, Laurel and Sourwood made me suspect the stream goes looow in the summer. Nice and plungy, though. Plenty of wood. Limestone.
Wildflowers were trying to get started, even after the dusting of snow and freeze.

We fished without getting love. Water too cold? No fish. Looks too good. Will return.
I have the number of our well connected buxom hostess and her French Canadian hill running man.  -+;
On to stream 2.
Easy access onto NF land. Meh thoughts from the get go. Low gradient, string algae, too much granite and quartz.
We walked. Walked some more. Gradient was not coming on fast enough, water volume was going down. All signs pointed to nada.
We turned tail back to the Jeep. A nice walk with fly rods.

Pitch Pine. Another sign of dry, poor soils.

I drank another beer, J drove, and we decided we needed a fish!
We stopped at the ugliest, most unlikely wild trout stream in the state. (Our designation.  :P)
How these rainbows got here, how they survive is a mystery? But they are there, and feisty, too.
Little BWO's were coming off and we found a run with of active fish. Our dries were too big, but they rose and slashed at them anyhow.
J got his fish and went downstream to brew coffee. I got a dandy 10" bow shortly after. He ran and lept like a champ.

Broke off the flies, climbed the bank and called it a day.
Poked around some Bluebells, Toothwort, Springbeauties and more before we hit the road for home.

What Doug said, he was lazy and didn't finish the trailer wiring.  I thought about taking him to a few streams that require a brutal hike for payback, but alas, I am lazy too.  Decided to scout a few streams I've been pondering about for a while.  Stream 1 we got treated way too good!  Fished some water that never gets fish.  Conditions just weren't right and while there are trout there, do not think it is an abundant thriving population.  Side note, disturbed a hawks nest and got a cool photo session with a big redtail as she screamed at us to move along.  I have about 50 pictures from different angles of the hawk, I went a little overboard.

You all get pretty pictures from Doug, what you all don't see is him kneeling next to coyote dung to get the shot.

Stream 2 was pitiful.  Hiked a half mile in and decided that by the time we hit some good gradient, there wouldn't be enough water to make it worth while.

Flea is not the best bassist of all time.

Big J

I crossed the stream and was making my way up to the house when I turned around to see Doug not budging.
Me: "You coming?"
Doug: "I'll just stay here and watch"

True friends watch their friends knock on random doors first thing in the morning from a distance.

Somebody had to live to tell the story! Plus, I was watching the Jeep.  :laugh:

What are those growths on that one tree in Doug's photo?  Also, what kind of tree was the big tall one that Doug was leaning against in J's photo?

Nice trip.
I was born by the river in a little tent, And just like the river I've been running ever since, It's been a long, long time coming, But I know change is gonna come.

Dee-Vo
