I liked and did not like the movie or the book. I have viewed and read both several times. Funny, beautiful and sad all rolled into one. I had a brother like Paul and he met the same end at about the same age. Haunts me to this day.

I don't know if any of you have seen the review of the "movie" below but I think this review and discussion hits the nail on the head. Fly Fishing as a metaphor for life.

Pretty much the same here.
I imagine a good many of us have similar experiences.

I am sorry, I really enjoyed the story, both book and movie, but I did not consider its fly fishing slant as a 'metaphor for life' any more than I did bowling in the comedy Kingpin.   Every pursuit could be measured as a metaphor for life.  Are they metaphors or just life, or part of life?

Agree Muddy.   I found fly fishing to be anecdotal to the bigger story and the movie compounded this notion.    That said, this book is chock full of great quotes.
