I would agree. I took the older one on her first wild stream a few years ago and she kicked ass. She got a slam and she had a 20" roach come unbuttoned at the net.
I think a simple clinical click/pawl reel will eliminate some of the mischief you refer to. It'll only be interesting for an hour or so.

My oldest is six, and swapping him from a push button spiderman rod to an ultralight spinning reel last year was a good move.

He can paddle a kayak and catch rock bass better than some adults Ive seen. Im not going to give him the fly rod just yet. Maybe 8 or 9. He's learning about catching fish and actually doing it. Dont want to up the difficulty just yet.

I did have him out shooting clays with the 20 gauge the other day though.
