Smith River Trout Unlimited (SRTU) will hold it's quarterly meeting on Thursday, September 7, 2017,  6:30 p.m., at Rania's Restaurant, 147 Main St, Martinsville VA .  Glen Stevens an Associate Professor of Environmental Science at Ferrum College will give a presentation on benthic macroinvertebrates. Benthic (meaning "bottom-dwelling") macroinvertebrates are small aquatic animals and the aquatic larval stages of insects. They include dragonfly, mayfly, caddis and stonefly larvae, snails, worms, beetles and more. They lack a backbone, are visible without the aid of a microscope and are found in and around water bodies during some period of their lives. Benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly used as indicators of the biological condition of waterbodies. Based on the macroinvertebrate diversity and sensitivity to pollution, we gain an understanding of our streams' health.  SRTU member Wayne Kirkpatrick will be there with his "Tub of Bugs" to help with "hands on" identification

Introduction of Chris Powell, recently named Philpott Operations Manager – Chris will give us a short update on Philpott repairs

"Fly box of Smith River Specials" – We are soliciting  flies to fill a fly box to donate to the "Silent Auction" being held at the TU Annual Meeting in Roanoke – If on Sept 7th everyone could donate 3 each or more of your "go to" flies we could fill a box in a hurry.

Don't forget the Swap Table   -  If you have not participated you may be missing out. In the recent past we have had books, magazines (free for the taking), rods, reels, tying vises,  waders, vests, tackle boxes and more. Bring what you want to sell or trade. Slap your name and a price on it and recycle the stuff you don't use or need. Look around for those "it was a good idea at the time" purchases you made but now reside in the back of your closet or garage. Be ready to haggle. Bring some extra cash and walk away with some neat "I need one of those" items!
