I'm beginning to think that fishing the Staunton is a lot like fishing for musky

Had some unusual weekday free time and went on a smallie mission at a local spot.

I backed out of a weekend trip in the mountains to stay home with a tired wife and a house in the middle of several stages of remodel. I was able to get about an hour and a half worth of fishing in yesterday afternoon though.

Swung by the Local powerbait club after work. Fished a nymph for a bit and caught a small bass. After nymphing boredom settled in, I threw a terrestrial and met some perty gills and a monster bass:

The redbreast are looking good. They are becoming scarce in my local flow due to being overrun by green sunfish.

I love catching redbreasts. And those Roanoakes look almost identical to our local rock bass to me.

I had a new to me vintage Fenwick HMG to test out so I headed down to the local pond but decided to check out the drainage ditch that flows out of the pond into the creek. This proved to be a good move as it was full of all kinds of fish species.

Flow:  270 cfs

Watershed:  Pee Dee

Drainage size:  230 sq. miles

Altitude:  880'

Flows were a bit higher than what I typically prefer for this river.  170-200 cfs is prime

Took a neophyte fishing.  Homeslice happens to me a ASM for our BS troop

Within 15 minutes into the trip, my paddle entered the water unsupervised, and slipped into the unknown.  After about a 40 minute search, it was found.  This wasn't good considering we put in a 2:45 PM

Back on track!

Homeslice caught a bass before I had mine pulled in.  It was a largemouth about 15.5 inches.

The rod across the pic is one hanging off the kayak.  The one engaged is almost invisible on the right.

Twas a splashy good time with the elevated flows.

The noob did well with his gear.  He landed a couple bucketmouth, a decent smallljaw, and a 15' bow.

What a splendid day to be on a local stream.

J got 3 small smallies. I lost a nice one (no witnesses, of course) and took the skunk on our short wade trip.
Water felt good. beers tasted good.
Flows need to drop a hundred or so. I almost swam.

Doug, tie up some intruders.  Those are some of the most effective smallie streamers that I've used to date.  They go deep, but don't snag like articulated streamers tend to do, thus making them a top choice for throwing from a bote, or wading for that matter.

Dougfish

I'm tying everything hook up. Even articulated.  y;

Except the wiggle minnow that boy jumped today.
