Nice weather at Shady Valley, eh? We'll see.
A conversation with a local I remember while standing wet inside the store/gas station during the 2007 Shady Valley PFF --
"You're one o' them fishin' fellers what camps at Irby's field every year, ain't ya?"
"Yessir."
"We like ta see you boys come. Our crops always need the rain."

DD. I saw your PM and tried to reply. Not sure if it worked  b'; JT is tracking on my situation. fundage is not an issue. JT, I'll talk payment on the militia page.
I am about 90% sure I will be there at this point. I will know for sure by Friday.

that said, I may be of use in obtaining refreshments from the Fort Bragg Class 6. That's at a decent discount and tax free. So think about it and get me a list.
0:0 The motley crew at Leedawg's gig last week know I always bring beer.

Phil, I'd bring my bass, but I haven't a clue how to play it.

I did manage get a picture of a fish:

Not long after getting into my tent Saturday AM:

I woke with the tent laying  down on my ear?  Thought blearily to myself, if that's Kyle and Psycho screwing with me 'cause I forgot to loan 'em my roll of duct tape, I'm gonna cut them.  Tent popped back when the wind took a break.  No PFFer's were cut during this trip.

Packed up during a monsoon Sunday AM and headed South.  Got stuff still drying all over the house.

Can't wait to do it again!

I've been saying that I would attend one of these for several years. The Army, School or Life just kept getting in the way. I finally caved.

I got on the road Thursday, but later than I wanted. I stopped outside of Boone to fish for a bit and take a break. The recent rains had conditions cloudy and fast.

I am the cockroach king!

But cockroaches were not what I wanted.

Frustrated after 30-some roaches and two pune brookies, I got back on the road.

I rolled into Shady Valley as the sun was setting. Too late to set up a tent, I sat up and drank some beers with Croaker, Phil, Kyle, Peddler, ODG3, and bunch of other dudes who's names are a blur.

I was supposed to live here:

But really lived here:

Woke up the next morning and got some breakfast. I wasn't familiar with the waters, but I am not one for hotspotting either. Croaker gave me a few stream names, I broke out the iPad and did some map werk, then I rolled.

He's dead.

I got in the water.

tandem cockroaches.

It was a fairly good first day. Size was iffy, but numbers were high.

I went back to camp and found most everyone was back.

The giant asshole in the sky opened up at regular intervals, but I didn't see anyone too freaked out about it. Later that night, I was fairly sure a tornado ripped through the valley. It sounded like a herd of locomotives rolling through.

Croaker's low country boil was the anticipated meal.

Croaker breaking down the secret recipe as ODG3 maintains law and order.

My contribution to the meal:

Woolly likes pickled okra.

Firemen.

The normal routine of consuming beer and talking shit ensued. I banged up my knee earlier and popped some pain meds which put me down around midnight.
I woke up the next morning and christened the blue canoe.

Did some map recons, ate breakfast, and rolled again. This time I took the road to Damascus because I had brookies on the brain.

Some of these dudes have been doing this so long, the vultures are following them.

Damascus was overrun with hippie wannabes for trail days. The ride took longer than I wanted. I reached my first site only to rapidly go from drizzle to downpour to hail. I hung out in a picnic pavillion.

The Black Dragon got pummeled.

As the rain and hail subsided, I retained my title as the cockroach king.

I won't bore you with another half dozen 6" roaches.

I was standing in this water when I heard this horrid sound, like a 747 about to crash into me.

I looked up and there was this wall of brown water coming at me. I threw my rod up the bank and jumped up as the water ripped by. I took this pic 30 seconds later.

I decided to find less water and less gradient. I eventually found a few brookies too.

I fished my way back to Shady Valley. Why'd you quit fishing? "everything was all blown out." Bro, do you even streamer?

Tennessee Red

Meanwhile back at camp, Stone-Man laying down the law to illegal parkers...

Churkin is cooking.

When bored, drink heavily, and take pics of Keith taking pics.

The next morning the rain was ridiculous. I rolled east in search of saner flows.

Back in NC and I found my damn brookies. I caught a few nice ones but took shitty ass pics.

The king of mayflies.

Plants

The one that got away.

the one that didn't

Y'all need to be more respectful of landowner's rights and quit tearing down their signs when you tresspass.  n!n

Break down the arsenal, load the ride and say bye.

Rainy ride home.

2017 - 46, 47

I rolled into camp of the 35th PFF, as the sun was setting, and ran into the old gang, there were quite a few old timers among the 30 or so fishermen, damn we're getting old. Kyle and Maniac talked me into a floaty trip for the next day. There was kind of a pot luck dinner thing going on with gourmet hot dogs, beans and fixins. Then everybody set about talkin and drinkin, over the years I've learned my limits so I crashed around midnight and left the pros around the campfire. The whooped and hollered into the wee hours and then piled into what I called "The circus tent!"

Friday morning we headed to the crossroads and had some breakfast at the local. Then we worked out the shuttle and I drove off following Maniac and Kyle. Shortly after hitting the blacktop, the truck swerved off the road and at first I thought they were going to lose the truck, then the boat and trailer swung over and then I thought they were going to lose the boat, but the Maniac held it together and I backed off a bit.

Plan was to take out at the lack and float from the dam, pushing through the top and concentrating on the lower sections where there was sure to be less traffic.

Tied on a fly that was tied for a drake swap and tied by WB25, it was a black and nasty articulated Galloup pattern, like a boogieman. It fished well and brought the only fish to the boat along with two follows. We were getting to the planned fishing sections when the sound of thunder came from over the ridge and soon we were seeking the shore to wait out the storm.

There were a lot of other boats on the water, but nobody reported having a bang up day.

Yea, we're in East Tennessee

Kyle was dreaming of sleeping on that sofa

It ended like this

"We're going to die on the damn South Holoston!" - Kyle

Maniac stated, "don't worry, I can row out from here in an hour".

"it'll take longer than that"

"wanna bet?"

"Sure, I'll bet a beer" and we shook on it as I set the timer on the phone.

Fifty-nine minutes and forty-seven seconds later the boat hit the shore at the take-out!

We left Kyle sleeping in the boat while we fetched the trailer and I headed back to camp.

It looked like this:

During the night the wind blew with freight train noise and rattled tents and nerves, several ditched their tents for the security of their trucks.

Al the stomp was consumed.

And breakfast was cooking.

"Chow" was called and then came..

The only gal amongst us, Peggy, held her own around the campfire, but the moonshine took it's toll and she had to take a nap along the stream while fishing
later in the afternoon.

FT Caddis, a cancer survivor, made the trip.

PHG pontificating

Hot or mild

Get in line

Now I know where I'll go.

The owner of 26 Acres Brewer showed up, but failed to bring any product, bad form IMHO!

Then I went fishing on a freestone, caught fish, but I was still wobbly from the night before, so I headed back to camp for some doghair.

That night it rained like hell, many a tent succumbed to the torrents. I bailed at four AM, the tape on the seams has failed and I couldn't find a drip free area in the tent.

A few guys missed the 8:30 photo session and a few more rolled in during the night.

It continued to rain through Sunday morning and I hit the road as the cook tent crew headed off to breakfast at the crossroads restaurant.

An interesting note--   All that rain and wind at 0230 AM Saturday turned out to be a tornado that touched down somewhere near Tom's house. It tore up someone cabin also

Yep, we beez the drought busters

Damnation! When I woke up during that wind, I kept asking myself, "doesn't that sound like a freight train?" and "should I seek cover?"
