Took advantage of a cheep flight to Denver. The wife wanted to hike some 14ers and I wanted to fish. So she brought some hiking buddies and while they hiked I fished. Arrival and departure day were spent tooling around the mountains and Denver. We rented a house on Air BnB, that made a great base camp. We cooked lots of good food, drank lots of good beer, and ate lots of candy  <-;: The lather being the reason for no food or beer pics. On to the report.

Saturday, I decided to fish the upper Colorado River. I fished this river 10 years ago and did well, so I decided to check on it status. I'm going to go ahead and tell you guys that, if combat fishing, crowded, extremely technical tailwaters is not your thing, stay the hell away from any big name river in CO. This shit was worse than opening day of DH stream. At one spot I counted 18 cars for 1 mile of river. Went to a spot above the tailwater that I thought might be less crazy. This spot was a gorge that was not for the faint at heart to get into.

Once arriving I had it to myself for a mile before a ran into others fishing down stream  b';  Climbed out after that and rode around looking for another spot to hit. Did loose a giant bow, but broke be off when a stumbled over a rock.

After stopping at a few spots and always someone was already there. I said, "Fuck it" and went to fish a piss trickle trib to end the day.

These guys look familiar.

Fished that trib for about a mile a decided to drive the hour back after catching my fill of brookies.

When I got back my wife shows me a video of her sister feeding a buck mule deer an apple in the front yard of our house. Don't have the link  :'(

Sunday morning I decide to hit the creek that runs behind the house we were staying in about 15 miles down stream to look for some bigger fish. Didn't find anything big and the fishing was tough. But managed a few run of the mill bows and browns. After giving up on that I decided I need to catch some cutties before i leave. So I drove to the headwaters of this creek to where I heard i could find some cutties. And damn i wish I had fished this spot the whole weekend.

This water was small and skinny so I grabbed the 2wt and left the net, not thinking I would need it.

Didn't take long to catch this cutbow. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of this fish for this water.

Then it was on after that.

Hell yes.  Nice work finding some of the less crowded water.  That small stream looks like a blast. y;
Yup, going fishing

Hell of a report. Those are some gorgeous fish in a beautiful place. Good to see you finding some private water away from the other folks.

I'd love to visit some place like that. Thanks for posting that up.

Grannyknot

looks like a great trip driver.
Have you nailed down the cheapest time to fly out there?
I was looking at frontier the other day and seemed like they had a RT ticket for around 225 with tax, but it was weird days like Thurs-Tues or something.
And i noticed they stop flying (from knoxville at least) when ski season starts.

That hit the spot on this fine hump day.   /'/

Then they nail you for your seat, then any and all bags. [emoji107]

With Frontier you have to work the system. But it can still be cheap.

They allow one free personal item. We looked up the maximum size of this. Which is 14x18x8 and found the exact size bags on Amazon for $5. And is plenty big enough to fit 4 days of clothes amd a few other small items. Fishing gear and hiking gear were checked. There was 4 of us. All with matching personal bags and one checked bag. The checked bag weighed 48lbs.

As for the dates. Your best rates are going to be on days that aren't as popular travel days, and odd hours. And during off seasons, which Oct is and off season in CO.

I was looking last week at Frontier flights and put together a flight later in Oct for $59 RT to Denver.

The planes are new. But are barebones. Seats dont recline, tiny tray. Seats dont always line up on windows. Dont know about in flight service because I slept through it.

Our tickets were $150 RT

As for Cutties. I think thats my new favorite trout. Next time I go out there I think I might just concentrate on them. To me fishing cutthroat streams gives you more of that remote Colorado experience.
