Cuyahoga River in Cleveland did catch fire in 1969.   It was one of the reasons the Clean Water Act was passed.

I'll be in the mistake on the lake next week. What a turnaround the area by the civic center and stadiums has been made. Plus, the coolest hotel I'll stay in all year.

Look at the pigeon river flowing into Tenn from Canton,NC .  It was lifeless for probably 100 years due to pollution from Champion paper in Canton.
Now it is a pretty fair smallmouth river with a few trout in it.

Yep. I can throw a rock into it from the end of my driveway.

It still has a ways to go, but it's 100x better than it was back in the 70s when I was growing up.  It stunk, the water was black, had a foot of white foam floating on top of it, and about the only fish living in there were carp and goldfish and an occasional channel cat with sores all over them. People used to throw their dogs into the river to kill the mange off of them.

The French Broad and Tuckaseegee were both horribly polluted at one time, also.
