Beloved grizzly Otis was again late for salmon season. Blame climate change.

There he was.

Just before 6 p.m. eastern on July 26 — the very same day 480 Otis emerged from hibernation in 2021 — fans spotted the park's beloved brown bear on a live camera at Brooks Falls in Alaska.

This year, the grizzly bear seen holding a fresh salmon and trudging through the water was late to his usual hunting spot at Katmai National Park. It's not that Otis hit snooze on his alarm — you can blame climate change.

"The last time he showed up this late, salmon were also late, and the salmon were late this year as well," said Candice Rusch, a spokesperson with Explore.org, the site that runs the 24/7 live cameras at Katmai National Park. "What we've been seeing in Alaska is that the salmon run has been trending later into July, which means for bears like Otis waiting longer to eat that salmon."

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Just Closed This Scenic Road Due to Bear Activity — What to Know

The National Park Service closed the Rich Mountain Road in the Cades Cove area as bears have been seen foraging for food.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has closed a park road due to bear activity during a time when the animals are foraging for food.

The National Park Service (NPS) closed the Rich Mountain Road in the Cades Cove area over the weekend, noting some of the park's bears have "become habituated to humans and vehicles," according to the NPS. The closure comes at a "critical time of year" for the bears since primary food sources like berries and acorns are not in season.

The closure occurred after a visitor in a vehicle suffered minor scratches after an encounter with a bear in the area.

"By closing Rich Mountain Road, we are protecting people and bears," Cassius Cash, the park's superintendent, said in a statement. "When people intentionally attract bears with human food or pet food it can lead to a dangerous situation for visitors, local communities, and the bears."

Weekend before last my son and I hiked up hazel creek a good ways and back. Saw four bears in a two days. Saw my first wild boar in the park. They worry me more than the bears.

I knew mamas parked their cubs near easily climbed trees to protect them from predators while mama went grocery shopping.  But I didn't know they had daycare centers.

An Alaskan Brown Bear Encounter that Changed My Life
A Fly Fishing Guide's journey of 20 years among the giant Coastal Brown Bears of South West Alaska

My first week of guiding in Alaska, and I found myself standing on the bank of a river, 40 feet from a massive Brown Bear. I'm frozen in place because I know I can't outrun it. It's not aggressive, but it ain't backing down either; it's just looking at me. Nothing really prepares you for this first encounter. It's funny, the thoughts that occupy your mind while in 'fight or flight' mode. I remember thinking, "This isn't what it looks like on television," and then, "Why did I take this job?" And the first lesson I learned that day? There is a big difference between an animal that sees you and one that is LOOKING at you.
