Did a little backpacking with the family last weekend.
Had to carry all this shit.

My son had mentioned that he wanted to go fishing. I strung up the rod and let him pick a dry fly. He picked a yellow neversink caddis. Wouldn't have been my choice, but probably the easiest for him to see and keep afloat without much trouble.  The 8' four wt was probably a little much for him. He had a little trouble keeping his rod tip up. But I gave him some pointers, knowing a good drift would never be achieved at the expense of the constant need to cast. But he did pretty well.

Then as luck would have it, it happened. Right as he was about to pull the fly out of the water to cast again, a fish hit the fly, and he inadvertently set the hook. It is a miracle the fish stayed on, because I had forgot to show him how to bring it in. First he went for the reel, I told him to pull the line, but he couldn't manage, so he just used the rod to drag it in.
A fine looking brook trout.

How cool is that? Did he get to drink that celebratory beer too?

ex - I'm not going to live with you through one more fishing season!

me -There's a season?

Pastor explains icons to my son: you know like the fish symbol on the back of cars.

My son: My dad has two fish on his car and they're both trout!

That's badass, dude. Very jealous. Can't wait. y;

Hell yea bud! That's good stuff. All kinds of good stuff in those pictures.

Although, I hope that was an overnighter. Seems a little brave to go for the weekend with one roll of shit tickets that appear to have already been broken in.

Glad to see you make him carry his own pack, too. Nice trip.

constant need to cast

Had my son (5) at a pond this weekend and it was the same thing.  I thought for sure he was going to hook one of us.

Good stuff getting you boy outdoors but I was also concerned about the tp situation.

Yup, going fishing

Thanks.  I try.  Usually fail.

Damn you aaron.  I got called casey today.  Just when I was starting to accept cory.
We only hiked in about 2 miles on a fairly flat trail.  Probably about all my son would do.

Oh yeah.  By the way, a 5% beer will absolutely wreck a 35lb 4 year old.

Yep.  Just a 1 nighter.  It was barely enough TP.
I may or may not have gotten into my little girls wet wipe stash sunday morning.

My biggest fear with the fly rod was later that night around the campfire when he decided it was a lightsaber.
TP situation was testy toward the end.  I didn't account for the fact that womens wipe when they pee.
