DOAKTOWN, New Brunswick — Opening day, for a New York-bred trout fisherman like me, usually meant cold weather, sometimes snow, and, with luck, a hatchery fish.

But for Ben Kaley, a financial adviser from Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick, opening day of the "black salmon" season this year meant 23 hooked and 18 landed (5 grown salmon and 13 grilse).
