A domain name is like any other branding. Do you think the guy who bought yahoo, or google, was expecting type ins? NO, you build the brand, simple.

From the beginning of the .com era, squatters and speculators have been a fact of life.  Most companies have found it more expedient to purchase their trademark.com from a squatter than to fight it.  A few have successfully fought squatters, but legal fees quickly outstrip the $50,000 to $60,000 that most squatters are trying to extort. 

So far, the law hasn't been able to adjust to this new frontier.  In time, of course, that will change, but for now, you either pay to play, or you find some oblique/clever name as a workaround.
