Shenandoah River has signs of fish kill
By William C. Flook (Daily Staff Writer)
Dead fish, some bearing trademark lesions, might be the first signs of a new fish kill on the Shenandoah River, though officials are still unsure if the disastrous die-off of the past two springs will repeat itself. "We don't know, we're open to that possibility but we really don't know yet," said Virginia Department of Environmental Quality spokesman Bill Hayden. He said about 75 dead fish have been reported in isolated areas along the river over the past two weeks, just as major water-testing efforts are initiated. So far, the phenomenon has manifested itself this year mainly on the North Fork downstream of Woodstock, and on the South River, the headwaters of the Shenandoah's South Fork, between Harriston and Port Republic.
