Look back over history and you will know its a real threat or maybe even evitable. It is said that 15% of the worlds population rules over the other 85%. Mainly its who has the money and resources. They will take care of their own and the people who take care of them. And even with all the technology out there it wouldn't take much to set us back a few years. All of Romes technology fell to ruins for a few hundred years after the empire fell. What if some event wiped out all the nerds?

only takes one little nasty microorganism to hit the reset button
Any of you guys know how to make penicillin? Antibiotics?Or can you get power or water to my house? I don't do manual labor for my food. Other than a few 'mater or pepper plants. Its a lot easier to go to the Piggly Wiggly. I know some of you guys think that would be cool but do it for real and it becomes very different. I like hot showers and Bojangles drive thrus myself.

I guess some of you all thought I left a steamer and split? Y'know, shit on the floor and run before someone catches you...
Only a few people on here actually know what I do in the Army and that was a poor attempt at humor related to my job.

I missed a few places too. There is this place... a socialist utopia according to such brilliant minds as Sean Penn and the angry old brother that sung the Day-O Banana Boat song. It seems people are having a hard time getting toilet paper at the local Winn Dixie, Food Lion or Ingles. Did I mention food shortages? It also seems when they bitch about it in public, they get the water hose or some CS gas tossed at them. But, our "Lord and Savior" Barry Sortero and his bumbling sea captain gone diplomat don't seem to care about brother Maduro down in Venezuela "the model of progress"(Thanks Jimmy). They seem inundated with the big red bear (BRB) and a country thousands of miles further away. More idle threats, just like Syria. No, I am not looking for another war; I'll leave that to John McCain. Like I said, I will sit the next one out until it comes home

So a few points to some replies: Yep Iraq was fucked up before ol George or Daddy wandered over there. It has been fucked up since the 1950s. Problem is, it is a different kind of fucked up now. It is the center of a sectarian war between Shiites and Sunnis just like the girl next door known as Syria. That comes down to Iranians, Hezbollah and Assad's boys fighting al-Qaida and vice versa, why in the hell would we want to disrupt that? And yes Muddy, we sent a lot of good men and women to their deaths there for no good reason. Then we  bailed out and left it a mess. I suspect Afghanistan will play out similar.

Survived the cold war? Yep we did, but it never ended. Like I said, the bear just took a nap. He's awake and has been since 2008. We allowed Ronnie and Daddy George to tell us we defeated communism. we didn't. They just restructured.

The point of that article was simple- wealth redistribution will save us. I disagree. It seems all too often the wealthy bourgeois elites are the one's selling that shit and they aren't giving up their money when they say it. A war won't fully fix it either because there will always be some rich assholes that profit off of it, but it will get the population down.

mountain land, ammo, precious metals, some gardening skills and some shelf stable food. You already should know how to fish or you wouldn't be here.

did I mention I quit drinking for three months out of the year? This is the mid point ;D

Shhhhh!  You can't talk about that...it doesn't fit the current narrative.  But since you did, don't forget Cuba.  Cuba is going to implode without Venezuela's support.  Should be interesting to watch it all play out.

If I was able to quit drinking for three months, I would stay quit. But hey, thanks liver, your a champ.  -+;

For the rest of your reply? Bravo again.

What narrative are you referring to?

Aka

Just for S's & G's I'll throw in a couple of cents.
There has always been inequitable wealth distribution. Some civilizations have had it worse than others but it has always existed.
There has never been a war, or for that matter a disease, that has slowed the growth of human population.
It's nice to know I have put something out here that can't be repudiated, although I'm going to go out on a limb and assume Flats will make efforts to do so. :)

I probably don't need to tell the old timers on this board that I'm older then dirt. Well maybe not that old but older then most of you. My point is I didn't figure I'd be around to see the next big war (No offense to those who are in our current mess but that is not a big war -even my war was not a big one) - even at my age I'm now thinking I may live to see a nuclear war. Here's why:

We said we would never let North Korea get the nuc but she kept working on one at the same time she was talking and now has one.  North Korea is likely rational enough not to use it - but she may very well sell the technology and critical components. Lots of willing buyers out there.

Iran is following North Korea's lead and is only a few steps way from a workable bomb. We are going to bluster and threat but we will stand by and let Iran join the nuclear club. Iran is mortal enemies with half the Islamic world and kissing cousins with the other half. The leadership of Iran thinks if they were to wipe Israeli off the face of the earth they would go down in history as saviors of Islam even if they themselves were bombed back to the stone age. Most of the nuclear club will be drawn into it and the first nuclear blast is likely to be followed by many more.

I see it coming in my lifetime - for sure in most of your lifetimes. The world that we now know will be changed forever.  Ok - have at me!!!

Al, are you not concerned about the US ending up like Syria?  We do have a history....

A civil war in the US of A sounds more dreadful and terrifying if you ask me.  Heck, I already have family members that would jump at the opportunity murder me just because I'm a non believer.

I assume you mean that the worlds population has always followed an upward trend? It took Europes population 150 years to recover from the plague. But yes it eventually recovered and continued to climb higher.

Concerned yes, but I don't think it will happen before we go for the big one.

One thing I forgot to mention - We are perceived as being so wishy washy and weak now that others are emboldened to test us at every turn - that is happening now.  Folks who looked at us for leadership are seeing what is going on and starting to foster different alliances. Leading from behind has created a giant vacuum which is not going to get better anytime soon. One miscalculation by friend or enemy could well be the spark that sets the whole thing off.

Al, I was with you on your previous post. I'm old, too. What do you propose for the U.S. to do presently, however? We don't have much leverage. We cannot afford another pointless war.  Our economy can't afford it, our military is stretched thin, we've wasted trillions for nothing, and public support for any further military action anywhere is non-existent. Maybe John McCain, but pretty much nobody else in America.
I'm not trying to give you a hard time here, or trying to insult you at all.
IMO, every war we have fought since WWII has been needless wastes of blood and treasure. That includes the one we both fought.

Aww, come on Aaron.  You know I only push back when I think you're wrong, which happens to be most of the time.  :P

What do I propose???  Unfortunately IMHO we have gone beyond the point of quick fixes. Military, economic, political and natural crisies will occur and our current administration does not have a track record of facing them in a manner which inspires confidence. In fact they don't seem to face many of them at all. We have 3 more years of "leading from behind" and there is a good chance that Obama will try to pull his legacy out of the fire by acting tough at an inappropriate time. A year from now we will be embroiled in presidential elections and both parties will be jockeying for position by declaring they are not Obama.

In the meantime our adversaries and allies will be playing to our perceived weakness. We can only hope we endure. Three years is a long time and I don't think the world will wait.

Well done Troutnut bd;0

Phil and I probably agree on more things than most think.  At least we are both fairly well versed in what is going on - we may not agree in how we interpret them but neither of us are sticking our heads in the sand or spending all our time watching American Idol (At least I'm not - can't vouch for Phil ;D)

One thing most of us agree on is "neither political party has served us well" b'; p;-

This is getting scary. Once again I agree with Al. Also -- Great posts, "Troutnut." I have enjoyed reading and thinking about them.
American Idol? Never seen it once. I don't watch that crap.
