Smith River Trout Unlimited will meet at Rania's Restaurant in uptown Martinsville, on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 6:30 pm. The fly tying will be the theme for the evening. Several of our tiers will demonstrate how to tie flies which have proven to be fish magnets on the Smith River. You're invited to watch or better yet, bring your vise and tie along. We will go slow and provide plenty of onsite instruction. All flies tied will go into a fly box which will be raffled off at the end of the meeting. Members who are fly tiers are also encouraged bring a few of their Smith River Specials to add to the raffle fly box.

This being our final meeting of the year the leadership will provide a summary of Smith River TU activities and accomplishments for 2013. We actually did pretty well – come by to receive a solid pat on the back or maybe give yourself a kick in the pants for missing out of some opportunities and good times. We will also give a heads up for potential events in 2014.

With the end of the calendar year we have also come to the end of the elected terms for your present SRTU leadership. In accordance with our bylaws none of us are term limited out and are willing to stand again for election. However, it may be time for new ideas and new blood. Scott (Treasurer) and Doug (Secretary) are just now feeling comfortable in their jobs but Shane (President) and Al (VP) have been around in various capacities and could stand a break – both would like to step aside if someone is willing to assume those roles. If you would like more information about the duties and responsibilities of any of the leadership positions contact the current office holder. We would love to add your name to the proposed slate – we will also take nominations from the floor.

You do not have to be a member of TU to attend our meetings.(You must be a member in order to vote on chapter business).   Anyone who has an interest in the Smith River Fishery is encouraged to attend.

Rania's provides us with a meeting space with the expectation that the majority of attendees will purchase a meal. (Good food, moderate prices). Address is 147 E. Main St., Martinsville, VA  24112. It is in the historic district of Martinsville known as uptown as it sits on a hill.

Smith River Trout Unlimited will meet at Rania's Restaurant in uptown Martinsville, on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 6:30 pm.

Fly tying will be the theme for the evening. We welcome Jack Patterson of the Nat Greene Chapter.  Jack started tying in the 70's and advanced to tying for four shops and doing a little instructing. After raising kids and keeping them in flies, he has settled back into tying mainly for himself. He ties mostly trout patterns.  He'll share a woven stonefly pattern and his unique take on a couple of other proven patterns.

Several of our members will also demonstrate how to tie flies which are proven on the Smith River. You're invited to watch or bring your vise and tie along. We will go slow and provide plenty of onsite instruction. All club flies tied will go into a fly box which will be raffled off at the end of the meeting. Members who are fly tiers are also encouraged bring a few of their Smith River Specials to add to the raffle fly box.

We still have chances to buy on the framed and signed artwork that we started showing this summer. When all 100 chances are sold, we'll pull the winning ticket.
